How Long Is Too Long for the Common App Short Response?

As of now, mine is 270--well over the 150 word limit. It does fit well within the character limit (App limits it to 2500 characters, mine is 1500 with spaces). How much do you think I should cut out of the short response? It's so long because I made it into a mini-essay, rather than just a paragraph, and I don't feel that I'd be able to convey the experience as well in a single paragraph.

Well....I'd say you'd better follow the guideline. Unlike personal statement that states the 250 minimum (which encourages student to write over 1500 as long as it's awwwwwwwwwesome), the short answer states the 150 max (SHORT answer, SHORT). Although it's believed that they are not gonna count it word by word, I think going over the limit by two lines (like 170ish) would be the bottom-line.

i would say youd be safe if it was under 200 words. just dont go crazy with it, and you should be fine.

are the extra 120 words all relevant and necessary to answering the question? Try and cut down as much as possible. I agree with aymyoonik that under 200 words should be safe. I doubt the reader will count how many words you have.

why take the unnecessary risk and go over? the point of a limit is to see if you can answer the question in a manner that is clear and concise. writing more is only defeating said purpose.

if it's a 150 limit, it's a 150 limit.
