I’m intending to send a research abstract to the schools I’m applying to but the original report is 10 pages long. So I was wondering what’s the norm length of a research abstract since my schools don’t seem to indicate it.

Send the abstract AND the complete research.

Abstract - for the AdComm
Complete - for the faculty member to review

Don't exceed 2 pages if you want the adcom to read your abstract and yeah, perfectdark9 is right, you should send the whole research.

abstracts should be about a page since they give a summary of your research.

The best way to figure out what is standard is to look at journal articles in the field that your research was in and get an idea of the range of lengths found there.

The ones that I submitted to schools were generally like half a page single spaced/1 page double spaced.

So if I were to send both the abstract and complete research report, do I have to address it seperately? Or should I just send everything to the admissions office?

everything together to the admissions office.

just a question thats a little off topic...Yale has an option that allows us to mail in our abstract to the admissions office. But when they say they want it, they say that they want the research ABSTRACT and dont mention the actual report. Everyone one on this thread indicates that you should send the whole report. If I send the whole thing itll look like I didnt follow directions. What do you think I should do?

hmmm...well, if they specifically say that send in only the ABSTRACT, then follow the directions, otherwise you can send your research as well.

I don't know how much this will help, but a thought just popped up - how about sending your research to a faculty member directly? Again, I don't know if this is a good idea and how effective that will be.

My abstract was around 75 words. It was a real short summary. I actually had an abstract section of my report though, and I just copy pasted that.

you are allowed to send ur research abstract to any college?? I already applied to my colleges, should i still send them in????

^ You should.

whizkid -

I actually did send my finished paper to a faculty member, who suggested that I send copies to two other faculty members. I don't know if it helped me or not, but I was accepted with a scholarship for research, so it couldn't have hurt too much!

singaporeankid: one pg should suffice. to be safe, i would suggest you send both to the adcom but send the actual paper to whatever dept in that school would be interested in it. (Ie: if you think you might want the Biomed ppl to pay special attn to you, then send the chair/head a copy.)

An abstract should be approx. 175 words.

absolutely should not exceed 250 words

thanks guys for all your help. i think i'll just send an abstract and the complete research to all my schools and pray for the best.

That's awesome jenskate! Which school do you go to?
