How long were your Common App Essays?

If you have applied ED1 to Vandy, or plan on it in the next 9 days :)...
how long are your essays?
And how long is TOO long?

Thanks! :)

BUMP!
come on people… this is important!

Here, I will give you a number.
1000 words… is that too long?
Thanks!

Way too long
Mine was 543 words. My college counselor suggested to keep it between 500 and 600 words, definitely not over 600. They have so many apps to read, they honestly won’t read the whole thing if it’s 1000.

mine was like 2 pages double-spaced.

also on a side note - if you already sent yours in, did you get an email or something confirming that they recieved it? should I call to make sure?

also 10000 is probably longer than they want - at a road show i went to the admissions guy said he really doesnt like it when its more than 2 pages b/c it’s just more work for them. But if it’s good it’s probably not a problem

graciebo, did the admissions guy at the road show specify if they liked double or single spaced better?

yeah he said 2 pages double-spaced is about what they want

my two Vandy undergrads both wrote common app essays that were about 7 to 10 pages double spaced. Judging by the admission stats for the years in which they were admitted, I would guess that more than their SATs and GPAs were considered. So obviously, a long essay doesn’t doom a Vandy app, and may actually help.

I agree. However, if you pad your essay with words to go for the “quantity over quality” rule, it certainly does not

My D’s essay was about two pages, double spaced. She said what she needed to say, and she was accepted.
