How low are the odds?

I know I have a slim chance, but what do you think is the possibility of me being accepted?

*College – NYU *

I’m a freshman, so I don’t have a GPA! 4 classes. I’ve aced my midterms/papers/quizzes/labs so far – I know everyone says they’re going to get a 3.8-4.0…so instead of telling me I’ll fail, just pretend I have a 3.8-3.9 GPA.

Teacher Recs: I have one professor I really like and I participate a lot in his class and get high grades – I’m taking his class next semester too. All my classes are small so I know my professors.

EC’s/Community Service:
Circle K – community service club member, very active
Earth Matters – environmentalist club member
International Relations Club – IR is my minor, I attend a lot of lectures/events

No leadership positions because they go to upperclassmen. Is this enough EC’s?

Essays: Will be good as writing is my strong point. I’ve already started and they’re not due until March 15th, so I’ll spend a lot of time on them and prune them to perfection

Applying for: Cornell University – College of Human Ecology
Major: Policy Analysis and Management

So, what're my chances folks? Have I got a teensy shot? Should I save myself $70, or pretend to be the last surviving member of a Native American tribe which will go extinct if I fail to reproduce? :)

If you're a freshmen and you have no GPA currently, then you aren't going to get in. Cornell specifically states that one semester transfers are not recommended, which basically translates to "do a full year of college first before you apply."

I would wait a couple more semesters. Think about it, you just got into college and now you want to transfer? Cornell will pick up on that.

I don't post often, but transferstudent is simply wrong here. Cornell may recommend X or Y but that in no way means that you HAVE to do X or Y. By the time you apply to Cornell, you'll have your fall semester of college (and those grades) under your belt as well as spring midterm grades. Cornell may advise against this (they would rather see more work) but if you show that you're capable (and a 3.8+ at NYU would show this), I'm confident you'd be a very strong applicant to Human Ecology.

transferstudent9 - I'm applying for Fall '09 transfer, so I will have finished one yr of college by the time I get there. Remember, applications aren't due until March 15th. Cornell will see that after 7 months into my freshman yr, I am choosing to transfer. I'm not trying to hide it from them. If you want to know why I want to transfer, I can post that as well.

thanks claymangs. I don't want to say I have a 3.8, because you never know, I could fail all my finals. But I got a 98 and 96 on 2 midterms so far, have gotten A's on all my papers and labs, and have high class participation, and that's what determines my grades...as long as I do well on the finals I think I should have at least a 3.8.

You still can't count on having a really high GPA until you earn one. Your GPA is below average for Cornell and your SAT is in range. Having low math grades might hurt you though, since you're applying for Human Ecology.

If the person actually gets a 3.8-3.9 Cumulative college GPA, you will be in the upper division of applicants to Cornell. Average ranges from 3.5-4.0.

Molly4190,

HumEc looks closely at math grades in particular? Why?

Ah, you are applying for the Fall09', that changes everything! I thought you were applying for Spring 09'. I would say go for it :)

Yep Fall '09...haha yeah I agree Spring would have been way too early. I don't think they accept freshman transfers so early.

molly - I don't know if they focus on math a lot, but I noticed they require SAT subject tests in math, and I didn't take one. I emailed admissions to find out if it's required for transfers and I'm waiting for a reply.

HopingFor - well 3.8-3.9 is high but they'll only see 1st semester, so they'll focus on HS a lot, which is bad for me.

thanks for all the input. I was thinking of applying for Spring '10 instead, so they would focus on college more and HS less. But I don't want to transfer midyear, and also I don't want to stay at NYU for various reasons.

Star, they will have midterm reports for the second semester. It can happen, could be a stretch though.

I know it's a stretch and my chances are low. That's a fact. What I was really wondering is if I should even bother applying now, or maybe wait a bit? Waiting another yr would help me, but I don't know if I could stand it.

does anyone on this thread go to HumEc? For some reason I don't see a lot of HumEc students on CC...I would love to hear from one of them.

My weak points are HS GPA and NYU courses - The HumEc admissions committee looks to see that transfers have taken courses similar to those in the HumEc curriculum. I have no freedom in my schedule, so that's a problem. I did try to take bio, but got stuck in environmental science (close enough? heh). I have no flexibility in my courses! I'm in NYU LSP if any of you are familiar with that.

Waiting till Fall '09 semester to apply for the Spring '10 could be quite beneficial. You just have to ask yourself how much you need it.

That's the thing - I don't know. I mean, I know it will boost my chances of admission. I know my chances right now are very low. Do you think they're so low I should wait some more, or should I apply for Fall '09? I also don't want to transfer in the middle of the yr, I hear it's much easier to adjust and make friends in Fall with the other transfers.

I know waiting would be to my benefit...but I really, really, really don't want to stay where I am.

Advice anyone? How many of you guys go to Cornell?

I don't know about the others, I think your stats are great. Just think a little, was your high school record really good? Enough to boost you up with the transfer? Or is your college record better?

If it's the former. Then I guess you should go ahead and apply whenever possible. But if it's the latter, then maybe waiting a little longer may help you in the long run.

I did well my last 2 yrs of HS, but my sucky 10th and 8th grade gpa are bringing me down...I think waiting would help me in the long run. But at the same time, I don't want to stay at NYU for 3 semesters.

Do you think my HS stats are so weak I should wait, or should I go ahead and apply?

honestly, I think if you get a 3.8 at NYU, Cornell won't completely overlook you HS GPA, but they will realize you have changed into a more-improved hard working student a 3.8+ at NYU definitely means you are good enough to attend Cornell, NYU's prestige and respect around the nation has made ridiculous strides around the nation, people know it's a good school

ok...one vote of confidence, hahah.

If I apply for Spring '10, I will have a good chance of getting in, I think. But I will have to transfer mid-yr, plus waste more time and money at NYU which I don't want.

If I apply for Fall '09, I will have a low shot...but if I get in, I will be ecstatic!

oh what to do, what to do...what would you do if you were me? btw, I'm not enjoying NYU at all so don't know if it's worth it to stay here. But if I get rejected from Cornell because I didn't wait....ouch I'd be screwed.

If I were you I would just apply. And you wouldn't be screwed if rejected, because you can apply for transfer again. You might want to look into other colleges as well if you dislike NYU and want a change.

I don't want to apply for transfer again after that...yep I'm also thinking of applying to JHU. anyone else...chances?

Stargazerlilies,

<a href="http://admissions.cornell.edu/apply/transfer/TransferSpecialRequirementsGrid.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://admissions.cornell.edu/apply/transfer/TransferSpecialRequirementsGrid.pdf</a></p>

"SAT, ACT, and SAT Subject Tests can
be submitted but are not required
International students: TOEFL or IELTS
(Cornell’s institutional TOEFL code is
2098; the departmental code is 00)"

HumEc has a different set of requirements for transfers than freshmen, and while a Math SAT II is required for freshmen, it isn't for transfers. In fact, as you can see, they don't even really require a SAT Reasoning test for admission. (But I would go ahead and submit yours anyway; a 2130 is pretty high).

As far as chances go, I think you have a good shot, but realize one semester of strong grades may not be enough to sway Cornell. If Cornell is really your top choice, what would be so awful about applying as a transfer a second time?

Anyway, good luck! I'm also applying as a transfer for HumEc for Fall '09. Hopefully we'll both be in Ithaca this time next year. :)
