I was looking through "What Are My Chances?" and I noticed that everyone applying to HYPS, Ivies, etc. has this huge list of ECs, APs, 5s on nearly all of them, great SATs, etc. etc. Well, obviously. But when it comes to GPA, I noticed there's a pretty wide range- all very high, of course, but varied nevertheless. So, I was just wondering.
If a person has a 3.7 UW and 4.15 W (estimates), what are his/her chances? More specifically, what must that person do to redeem himself/herself? Set a world record in the 400 meter run? Cure cancer? How big (examples, please) of an accomplishment would that person need to acheive? How about for 3.8/4.2? etc. etc. Basically, would anyone be able to give me a list of plausible GPAs that would have a chance at HYPS, Ivies, etc. with corresponding ECs, honors, etc.? I know it's sort of a vague question, but essentially, I'm asking, how low can you go? How low is too low? Now, I'm not asking if saving the world from an incoming asteroid would redeem a 2.5, but basically, considering viable accomplishments- even slightly extreme ones- what's the limit? UW 3.5? 3.6?
Just a rough estimate, please. Again, sorry for being really vague. Appreciate any answers, though.

Well, you could look at the Academic Index cutoff for athletes at Ivies. That is the absolute lowest you could go, because athletes are by far (a lot more than URMs or legacies) bumped up in admissions.

Sorry- URMs?
Pretty clueless.
But thanks a ton- how would I look that up? Googling "Academic Index cutoff Harvard" doesn't seem to give much.

You don't want to be below 3.75, after that its difficult to redeem yourself. HYPMS let a lot of 3.8+'s in, they really aren't only looking for 4.0's. They want class ranking, rigor, and intellectual pursuits.

URM = underrepresented minority. African Americans/Native Americans/Inuit(:P)
