How low is too low?

So I am looking to apply to grad school this year for museum studies, but my GPA is fairly low. I am currently a double major in biology and anthropology and only have a 2.95 as of right now. I have both research and internship experience within the field of museum studies. I have yet to take the GREs, and wondering if it is worth doing ? If I do decently do I have a chance of getting into a program?

i think you should take the GRE and try getting a high GRE score. A high GRE score will offset the low GPA that you have and will strengthen your application!

How high is high for GRE score?

I would say you have a shot at an MS program, probably without funding. But don’t bet your life on it.

Generally, this will not be the case. In most fields and most programs GPA is ranked much, much higher than GRE, which is generally the least part of the application. The real advantage of the GRE is that many fields use it in awarding fellowships, but with a 2.95 he will not be eligible.

This is why they release percentiles.

Now i dont know if this is being nit picky, But most of the programs I am looking at are museum studies programs that are through anthro departments. Will the fact that my GPA within my anthro degree is a 3.4, and the reason my overall GPA is lower is because of the chem and physics classes in my biology degree help my chances at all?

Yes it will, but not everywhere and perhaps not enough. Every department does things differently, but I still think your most likely result is an unfunded masters admit. Bear in mind that funding in this area is slim in the best of years, and many departments are admitting only a single student a year!

The actual gpa in your major can help, but depends on the program and the competition. Many programs take the kids the dept and the profs specifically want- it can be far more personalized than UG. The real people to speak with, first, are your profs. They need to recommend you, they can sometimes have defining pull of they have contacts at the grad program. You often can’t do this without them, so discuss this with them.
