How many 4-year colleges & universities are there in the United States?

I recently have read that there are approximately 2,800 4-year colleges & universities in the US, but is this number accurate? Can anyone else confirm this?!

Perhaps using CollegeBoard's Matchmatcher and setting its only requirement to "4 years" might answer your answer.

10000000000

My pr book says somethinng like 5,000

so many so many

i got 2084 matches on college board

interesting california has 148 4 yr colleges and princeton review lists their 122 best calif colleges...i thought it would be good to be listed among that list, but it basically lists about 90% of the schools in calif

So, what should I say? I'm actually putting this number in my college essay.. lol.. what should I go with?

i think the underlying issue and bigger problem is your essay and why you include this number. my guess is you have a sentence along the lines of "out of the 2500 colleges and universities in this country, xxxxxx is the perfect fit for me!"

Is it a bad idea?

it sounds super cheesy. you know and the adcom knows full well that you're not actually choosing from a list of 2500 schools.

if you're using it as a transition then take it out because it's necessary. go into the real reasons why you want to go to xxxxxx school and cut back on fluff.

ahh.. thanks for the reality check. Sometimes I forget that I'm writing an essay about what I want to say and not necessarily what they want to hear.
