We were wondering- Does anyone know approximately how many were accepted off the Wait List last year???

Someone posted on another thread that last year there were 40-some, if that helps.

# of students enrolled from wait list:

42 for the 2009-2010 school year
49 for the 2008-2009 school year
0 for 2007-2008
54 for 2006-2007 (current seniors)
38 for 2005-2006

My son was-I think the number was 42-

He called, spoke to an admissions officer, assured them that Midd was his first choice, updated his packet, sent some more prize-winning newspaper articles and editorials he had written, and had a new cover letter explaining why he’d be great for Midd-and vice versa. He also agreed to take Feb admission-he hadn’t before-and we had an admissions person in our town call and ask what he was missing/how he could be a stronger applicant. The person actually said he was a great candidate, there were just too many very qualified people and he hadn’t caught anyone’s attention.
A college professor that he did political work with also wrote a letter about how Midd was making a big mistake, and explaining some more of his special attributes, as well as comparing him favorably with older students on an intellectual and maturity basis.
We did not rescind our request for financial aid.
He came off in mid May. It ws a rough month and a half. He’s there now, and loves it-and is more appreciative than he would have been…

Oldbatesiedoc: How soon after your son’s waitlist notification did he do all of this? How long did this take? I’m wondering in case I might have to work my way off the waitlist for another school, which I am leaning toward as my top choice (but I haven’t done any overnights and whatnot for it yet, so I’m not sure). If I do get waitlisted, should I start as soon as possible to try and convince the adcomm to take me?

and thank you for sharing your story, I’m sure it’s very encouraging for anyone who was waitlisted at their top choice.

Don’t tell my S…Seriously, we’re here to help(the parents lurking on this site)

He called within 1 week, , got the guidance person to call after a week, and sent all his stuff in 2 weeks with his new cover letter.
The letter from the prof was done in 2 weeks. It was sent directly by the prof to show we didn’t read it or know what it said, tho she showed us after she sent it.
He then communicated by e-mail to make sure they had received his materials, and called May 1st to ask when the wait-list would be reviewed and could he send any other materials.
He didn’t repeatedly call-didn’t want to be a pest.

Thank you so much - hopefully this will help us out if we need it. Congratulations to your son on getting off the waitlist! It’s great to hear that he loves it at Middlebury now.

You can not imagine what a relief it was.
I know it is being somewhat psycho to get so invested in a certain school, or schools, but he was really set up by several interviewers to expect LOTS of acceptances, and it really crushed him.
The Princeton interviewer(who comes from Princeton, not a local)said "A boy like you will have your choice, here’s why you should go to Princeton…"etc etc and said no such thing to the other 4 kids she interviewed at our school. They rejected him flat-out…
It was a very bad month and a half at our house last year…Good luck, and I hope they take another 40. That will leave a few hundred others who will be crushed, but hopefully have other good options…Otherwise, there is always a meaningful gap year…

I got in off the waitlist, also in mid May. I sent a letter explaining why I took my place on the waitlist, but other than that, didn’t do too much.
