<p>In 2007, Harvard admitted 2058 students.
Its acceptance rate was 9.0%.
220 black students were accepted.</p>
<p>Assuming that the black students were accepted at the overall rate, there were 2444 black applicants.
In actuality, there were probably fewer. The black acceptance rate was likely higher. Eg: MIT’s acceptance rate was 12.5% overall in 2007 but 30.5% for black applicants. If we assume there was a similar disparity, a 144% difference, the black acceptance rate would be about 22%, meaning that there would have been 1000 black applicants. </p>
<p>Numbers of applications have increased since then of course. Perhaps there are 1500 black applicants.</p>

<p>Yes, that is exactly the reason. Millencad’s statistic is correct. It is truthful that minority students receive admittance to elite institutions at several times the rate of students from majority backgrounds despite achieving lower scores on objective standards.</p>
<p>I agree with Millencad’s estimate. There will likely be close to 1,500 black applicants this year.</p>
