Does anyone know if it's possible to find out how many of the 18,000(estimating) Duke applications come from the Carolina's?

Yay...I didn't realize that the chance was that much better just because I live in NC. Maybe I have hope...

Yes, North/South Carolina residents get a pretty big advantage in admissions. In fact, I believe in the point system they get almost as much of an advantage as hispanics. The cutoff score for caucasians is 25, for hispanics is 21, and for blacks is 19, I believe. I think for North/South Carolinians the cutoff is around 22 (correct me if I'm wrong, someone). This is due a quota in the school's charter that necessitates at least 15% of the student body to be from the Carolinas.

hey where did you get this point system thing?

From a friend who works in admissions...Crap, don't think I was supposed to say anything lol, now that I think of it...

wow seriously?

how do these numbers add up?

that's hot.

Point systems ... cutoffs that are different for minority students than for white students ... yup, that's discrimination.

Even as a private institution, Duke still recieves some federal grants-in-aid (at least to the best of knowledge), so Duke is bound to uphold certain federal policies, so the "Duke is a private school and it can do whatever it wants to" argument doesn't hold up.

Joey

Yeah I'm pretty sure that that is illegal. The supreme court ruled quotas or point systems unconstitutional.

I'm glad I'm from SC though...

Discrimination or not, it still happens [although not neces. in a pts system] and for a reason... the need for diversity

But the Supreme Court clearly ruled that point systems are Unconstitutional. If this is true, then it needs to be brought to light to the authorities.

oh hush up... they will obviously no longer use a points system... but there are many ways of implementing a similar theory of positive discrimination without "points"

Call the cops then. You don't think that the Admissions office will have an answer for it? And what's your source? An anonymous person on an online message board who herself got the information second hand? They'll probably just dismiss you as a disgruntled applicant (esp. if you don't get in).

Hmmm, that sounds discouraging. But I do urge you to do what you think is right...

I wasn't suggesting that I was going to do it, only that if that is true, then a wrong needs to be righted.
Chill out.

I love how people say a wrong needs to be righted but yet have no intention of doing it themselves. That's courageous.

By the way, the point system is just for figuring out who is an auto-deny, auto-admit, and who goes to the admissions committee to be debated over, so it is neither illegal nor unethical.

yeah I figured that.
out of curiosity, do you know how the points are assigned? Or what the maximum number of points are?

I believe that is in the Princeton Review book (published, again, it's not a covert system).
