How many APs are too many APs?

What do you think the limit is?

Really depends on the person and their interests

(Based on CC standards more than the average high school student!!)
I’d say in one year, 6 or more is around the limit.
In someone’s high school career, I’d say upwards of 20 is getting to be too many (unless you’re shooting for State AP Scholar…but that’s still kind of ridiculous).

That’s a good question.

My friend took 4 her sophomore year, but she transferred to the school of math and science, so I’m not sure how many she will be taking by the end.

I’m only taking a max of 7 (if that many even). I doubt that’s a lot, but

Sorry, I couldn’t finish my statement.

But I don’t think I could handle many more than 7.

It really does depend on the person, and often times the rigor of the schools AP program.

Do you think 5 is a lot? Next year I’d be taking AP Lang, AP Bio, AP Calc BC, APUSH, and AP Macroeconomics.

Not more than eight classes (presumably that’s all you have in the first place). Not more than two self-studies.

^that’s a very rigorous schedule. Good enough for any college

The right amount is the most you can take while still maintaining all As/Bs, all 4s/5s on the exams, a proper amount of sleep every night, and a social life.

If you cannot do all of those things, you are either taking too many or you have bad time management.

Some people don’t take any APs, and probably wouldn’t be able to handle any. Others take 7+/all AP classes and school, as well as self-study or take more online. This usually results them taking at least 10 AP exams in May. Last year, there were a couple of people at my school who had only AP classes on their schedule. But there were also dozens of people who didn’t take any APs at all. It really depends on the person, their work ethic, and their abilities.

I’d say that in general, taking all APs would be too much, but many people go far beyond that. Having at least one elective class designated for something such as study hall, yearbook, executive board, theater, chorus, newspaper, band, orchestra, etc. would probably be the norm for most people, even those who take lots of AP classes.

There is also the question of course rigor. Taking all “AP lite” classes such as AP Environmental Science or AP Human Geography might not be as demanding as having several hard APs and the classes that are not AP being classes that are done via dual enrollment and go beyond what is covered in any AP class. (AP Physics C: E & M, Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations) Of course, the latter is more likely to be “too much.”

It really just depends on the person. For myself, I think 5 is a good number. Not too many to be completely overwhelming, but not too easy. If I wasn’t involved in manyy extracurricular activities, I think 6 or 7 would be a good number for me. It also depends on what APs you are taking. For example: Taking AP Bio, AP Calc BC, AP Chem, AP Physics C, and AP Spanish is much different than taking AP Psych, AP Enviro, AP Macro, AP Human Geo, and AP Stats.

So my 5 APs that I mentioned before you think is manageable? Obviously it will be challenging, but it’s not enough to kill me and end my social life?

It’s not going to kill you.
What’s this social life you speak of?

Are you saying I won’t have one due to the 5 APs or are you actually asking…?

This year I am taking 6 APs along with 2 honors. It’s absolutely possible to take them and manage a healthy social life.

Ok, I plan on working much harder than this year. I’m in all honors and I have all A’s and A+'s.
But I like going out every Friday and Saturday night too, so I’m worried that I’ll have to sacrifice some of my social life in the sense that I won’t be able to go out and have fun.

Oh, I don’t know. I unwittingly allot about 90% of my life to procrastinating and I’m reasonably okay.

I’m taking 5 (one’s a DP) this year. Well AP/IB, but I’ll be taking 7 next year. I think it’s fine because although they’re SO much more difficult to handle for me, Honors are way too easy and full of slackers because a lot of classes don’t even have regulars.

I mean, I guess it depends on the person. But I’d say the max would be about 7. Even that’s a lot, but if someone is a really dedicated student, then why not. You said 5 APs, so yes, I think that you can handle it. IMO time management is the key to success… Good luck!

by the end of senior year I will have taken 16-17 APs
and like 10 AICE Classes, which are Cambridge college class equivalent to AP or IB
