As my title says, I'm wondering what the CC community considers are below average, average, and above average amount of APs?

As my username indicates, I'm aiming for a few competitive schools. So, given the selectivity of top tier schools, what do you guys consider is an average amount of APs? I notice that a lot of students here end up with 7-12, and sometimes even more APs. Yet, at my school (a very competitive prep school), I hardly ever see people take that many APs (average is around 4). So, I'm just asking what the opinion of the CC community is on this subject.

I do understand that AP doesn't exactly refer to a level of difficulty, it only refers to the advantage of gaining credit in a course towards college, and that several schools do not offer APs, and that one shouldn't obsess over the amount of APs they take. All I'm asking is for your general opinion (I'm not trying to start some sort of discussion on the importance of APs, I'm just looking for your opinion).

Take as many APs as you can reasonably fit on your schedule and you’re fine. Number of APs you should take depends on your school so you should model after someone else from a previous year who got into a top school.

It depends on how many AP’s are at your school. At mine, I would say two are below average, 3-5 average, and 6-7 above average. Its had to reach above average though.

This year (junior year) I’m taking 6 AP’s (both physics in one class) as classes and 6 I’m self-studying (one of which is with the recommendation of my honors Chem teacher, who also does AP). I’ve already started with the courses that I’m self-studying. Senior year I’ll take 5 AP’s (there won’t be any others classes left in my school!) as classes with probably 1 self-study.

I just realized I used average and medium, so consider medium as between average and hard
Um
Freshman:
average:0
med:1
Pretty damn good: 2+
Sophomore:
Average:1-2
Med:2-3
Hard:3-4
Junior:
Average:3
Med: 4
Hard:5-6
Senior:
Average: 4
Med:5
Hard: 5-6+
So like, total:
average: 4-7
medium: 7-11
Hard: 12+

Wellll, not offered any APs as a Frosh since 9th is in Junior High in my district. Took 1 my Sophomore year (others were Pre-AP or Honors), 3 Junior, and 5 this year. So 9 total.

I do agree with TechnoMusic, there is definitely a big difference on what is seen on CC and what is seen in the average world.

Dorkyelmo, I’ve taken 3 so far (AP Spanish Lang, APUSH, and AP Eng. Com, which I self-studied), and this year I plan on taking 4 (AP Bio, AP Lit, AP Stats, and AP Human Geo). At my school, a 7 is already way above average (although there are always a handful who take over 7, but having more than 7 can be quite rare). But, like dblazer mentioned, one can only take 5 classes at my school, so the reason people don’t take as many is because of scheduling conflicts.

I am still amazed at some of these numbers…wow!

It really depends on the school, as well as the rigor of the course. For example taking Envisci, psych, stats, and euro is much less impressive to me then taking say chem, bio and calc bc. That being said at my school of about 1600 students there are maybe 150 AP tests taken each year. So i guess you could say at my school people typically take .1 ap tests Most of the high achieving students at my school (top 10) take 6-8 tests throughout Jr and Sr year (we don’t generally offer AP classes to underclassmen unless they come from a different school where they took prereqs.)
