^^ long list! Not everyone can do that in their high school. My daughter’s a junior at MIT now, and she took 7 AP courses at her school. Her school didn’t allow freshmen to take AP classes and didn’t allow students to double up on science courses. In the context of that large public high school, 8 AP classes is the most a student can take. She might have taken AP French had it been possible to take French 4 her junior year. However, she skipped French as a junior and took it up again as a senior when it fit into her schedule. That is another common problem at some large schools; overcrowding and scheduling problems can make it impossible to enroll in all the courses you’re qualified to take.

MIT understands all of this. The admissions officers just want to see that you’ve challenged yourself in the context of your school.

Took:
AP European History
AP US History
AP Physics B
AP English Lang
AP English Lit
AP Chem (online course b/c school didn’t offer it)

AP Environmental
AP Bio
AP Studio Art
AP Music Theory
AP Calc AB

My school required 2 periods every day for AP sciences, which made it difficult to take more than one with a variety of other classes. We also couldn’t take AP’s as freshmen and were only allowed to take AP Euro sophomore year. Only as juniors and seniors were we allowed to take other AP classes.

I took 6 AP classes (US history, US Gov’t, Stat, Calc AB, Eng Lit, Span Lang) out of 8 offered at my public school, am headed to MIT next week.
Some people are crazy! How do you have time for anything except studying with ~20 AP classes?
Colleges do want kids to be well-rounded, not just have impressive numbers of courses…

I entered high school as a junior after not having had any type of education for five years. They would only let me take one AP course, AP Physics B. I got a B, worked hard at college courses all summer, and now feel ready to take on the AP limit of AP Calc BC, AP Eng, AP Chem, and AP Gov/Econ. I’m worried most about AP English though.

Holy snap. That’s a lot of APs.

my interests differ a little from what my school offers, so AP physics and AP european history are independent studies, AP Calc BC online through northwestern.

lol, the MIT app lets you put on a max of 12 aps on the page

Wow. You guys have so many APs offered!!!

Wait - Is taking AP Calc AB and BC a waste of time? My math department head said that Calc BC would be enough.

^BC covers the entire AB curriculum, plus series and some extra topics, so taking both requires repeating a lot of material. A lot of people who took both had to do so because their school requires them to take AB before BC.

Did you take both?

No, I only took BC, but I had a bunch of friends who took AB, and we often had the same work. My teacher kept my class informed on where we were in relation to the AB class, and when we were doing topics that were only for BC.
