How many APs is too many?

Hi guys! Ignore the previous posts on this account those were my sister.

Im going to be a sophmore next year and am taking one AP class. Ive been thinking ahead and this is my plan for junior year.

AP Chemistry
AP Physics l Algebra-Based
AP US Government & Politics
AP Language
AP Calculus BC
Wind Ensemble
Maybe French lll (idk due to scheduling issues)

Will this be too overwhelming? To people who took 5+ APs how much is too much?

Speaking for myself, that is fine assuming you have taken introductory/pre-ap courses for all of those.

As a sophomore I would add more APs to your schedule if your highschool permits. If not, self-study an easy AP like psychology so you get used to taking AP exams and actually doing AP homework. The only thing I would be concerned about is the sudden jump from 1 AP to 5 APs.

My school dosen’t allow more than 1 ap and 1 honors class and i am taking both. I could definitely investigate self-studying an ap class. No one at my school ever takes that many and the counseling department tends to discourage it. Our counseling department is always wrong though. Thanks

The number will vary by person. The answer is, if the number is such that you cannot handle the schoolwork, plus your EC’s, then it is too many.

Keep in mind that for college admissions, it is not the person with the most AP’s that “wins.” Anything over 6-8 throughout all of HS will not make your application appreciably stronger, although there may be valid reasons for taking more.

I think that is FAR too many classes to attempt to take in ONE year, given you have only taken 0NE this year.
What is MORE important than the # of AP Classes you take next year is that your GPA does not go down- not even a little bit. Taking THAT many classes is almost guaranteeing a drop in your grades next year.
So spread them out over the next 2 years- move one of the SP science classes to your senior year.
As skieurope says, there is no extra credit given by admissions offices for students taking more than 6-8 AP classes IN TOTAL.

One more thing:

If the scheduling issue is due to trying to jam in 5 AP’s, I’d suggest resolving the scheduling issue. A 3rd year of a FL is more valuable to many colleges than 5 AP’s.
