So, I have less than a month to choose my courses for next year, my Senior year. To give some background, I've already taken 3 APs this year, and none before then. My school offers 17 AP courses. My top choices are NYU, UMich and Carnegie Mellon. I could fit a maximum of 5 APs in my schedule for next year. What would be a suggested amount of APs for me to take for next year, also taking into account manageability?

A few questions for you:

So how hard are you finding the AP classes you are in now? Could you reasonable see yourself doing 5 and keeping your grades up? And what would you have to give up if you take the max number of APs your schedule permits? If you have to sacrifice a class that’s really important to you (music for a future music major, theater for a future theater major, etc…) then it’s not worth it.

On the common app, a guidence counselor has to rate your transcript according to the level of academic rigor. What’s the norm for the top performers at your school? Do all the good students take 4 or more APs? Are you going for a ‘most rigorous available’ rating?
