My guidance counselor yesterday warned me that taking the SAT too many times can hurt your chances with colleges, if they see all of your attempts.

Now I'm worried. I'm taking them for the 2nd time in January, but was planning on taking them possibly a 3rd and 4th time if my scores weren't good.

So my question: how many attempts is too many? Will this hurt my chances if I take it more than two times?

I know the number is typically 2-3 times, but more than that, and it does look pretty bad. As long as admissions officers see the improvement as you take more tests, it won’t hurt your chances.

Personally, I took them 3 times and am dying to take it a fourth - I was very sick on the 2nd time so my scores dropped - but I’m resisting.

If you’re confident that your score will increase, then go for a third time! Good luck! =)

If you think its going to bring you significant improvement, go for it. If its only going to raise your score about 200 or less points, I wouldn’t bother. Colleges are really going to look down on you for taking the test more than once, and you can always explain it in the additional info section of your app if you’re that worried about it.

^^Are you out of your mind ?200 points is definitely a drastic improvement and many people can only dream for this…
Besides, you always use the score choice policy

3 max, in my opinion
more than that, without a huge, huge increase (and i mean like, 1500 => 2000 => 2300 kind of increase) will make you look desperate and unintelligent

If all your schools allow score choice, I would say: take it as many times as you want, but only send your best two or three max. (Colleges don’t know if you used score choice, right?)
