My son (a junior in HS) has just decided to go to college for MT. He is a talented actor, singer, dancer (as I am sure many are)!! I would like advise about how many schools a student should audition for? I know it is a competative process and want to make sure he will have a choice between a few this time next year. Thanks!!

My suggestion would be for you to initially read the thread “Class of 2009 and 2010 - Preparing to Apply” which is a featured thread pegged at the top of the list of threads. Lots of good info about the process including selecting schools to which to apply. Then go to the “Big List” of schools, also pegged at the top of the threads. Between the two, you will get a lot of info to start the process and to then formulate load of questions. To answer your question in a nutshell, 6-10 including 1 or 2 non-audition BA programs.

Adding on to Michael’s excellent advice you will want to make sure that he creates a varied list of schools, making sure that the non-auditioned programs are true academic safeties that he would be happy to attend. Many BFA MT programs have admit rates in the single digits.

I agree – it’s very possible to apply to 12 or more schools and not be admitted to ANY of them – I have seen this happen to quite a few students. It’s important to do your research and have a good mix, including several non-audition schools that your son qualifies for academically.
