UGH--Grades 9-11, I've gotten one B. and I know, for certain, that come april I will be rejected. it's unfair, lol.

grades aren't everything, please stop freaking out. I got an average of three B/B+ every single semester, excluding the first semester when i got straight B+s (let me tell you, being a straight-A student my whole life I thought the world was going to end... but then again, i went from an easy public school to a hard private high school). my cumulative gpa is a little below a 3.5 but first quarter of this year i had all As and one B+. i got in EA.
so the moral of this story is: stop thinking grades and test scores are everything. they arent.

yeah, stop obsessing over grades. you've already done the best you could. even if you had perfect scores, if you came across as a boring drone, you probably wouldn't get accepted by harvard. they look for interesting people, for those "intangibles" that can't be conveyed through merely a number.

besides, acceptance at harvard isn't formulaic like that. there's no set number of B's that could make or break you.

There is no one good thing that gets you into Harvard. (There can be one bad thing that keeps you out, however). It's a combination of good things detailed on your app that impresses the adcoms. However, among all these good things, the single most important thing is your grades. Having great grades can go a lot further in making up for a weakness somewhere else (SATs, ECs, etc) than the other way around.

So one or two Bs won't hurt you, especially if the rest of your app is strong. But you don't want to be turning in an academic record that is littered with Bs left and right.

As for actual results: my daughter is currently a Harvard freshman. She got in RD with two Bs in high school. The rest were As. Your mileage may vary.

haha, i know i know. dont freak out, grades are not everything. but still, i was just worried b/c i had a horrible semester and was just really worried that i was finished
californiacutie, did you have some sort of strong involvment in an ec? b/c if your gpa was around 3.5 is seems like u must have done something big to get in ea

tennisdude, a 3.5 is still a good GPA, but I'm almost certain californiacutie did have a strong involvement in one or more EC's. I didn't start worrying about my grades until my freshman year in high school, and therefore, it was tough getting into the swing of studying all the time (never really did before) and managing my time with all the other EC's I was involved in. I'm now a straight A student, but I have a friend that also got in EA who had several B's throughout high school, so again, the grades AREN'T everything.

I agree with you totally, allureNY86!

i came from a public junior high school where i got a 4.0 for not even listening to a hard private school where i worked twice as hard and only did half as well. so yes, i do have a lot of ECs and leadership...but that just goes to show you that grades aren't everything.

I got into harvard ea and I got a B every year in english (regular sophomore and senior year, AP English language junior year) and I got a B in AP United States history junior year..

****ing son of a bitch.. i hate my english teacher.. she is around 5 - 6 years older than i am and she is teaching eng ap, cuz the other one retired... she doestn know how to teach and just gave me a B with NO JUSTFITICATION... asdfl:asdFSADFASDFASD

so warcraft, that means you got in w/ 7 b's?

dang..i have 11 Bs...
does it matter how many courses you're taking?

If you're taking hard courses, or a lot of courses, B's probably don't matter. You can't change that. Instead, just apply and worry about how to make your application even better.

tennisdude..i had 8 B's counting by semester

yeaah! you go, warcraft! (no, that was not sarcastic. i was saying how dominant you are by not being all grade-centered)

Bumpity bumpity bump!!!

warcraft, did you have a big hook or special case that made up for your 8b's?

I might get a B+ in my AP Chem and AP Calc AB class as a sophomore in the first semester. Am I screwed for Harvard with a 3.85/3.9? Bump!!!

oh, to whoever who feared that dreadful amherst video, i think whoever posted may have embellished. i recall hearing about this crazy video before, so i watched it some months back, and i remember that the candidate in question was "slipping" and this wasnt like 3Bs, the adcom said "like.....B-s." B- is slightly worse than B, and i think the adcom said it in plural form, like the kid was getting a couple of B-s. So I don't think it's that insane. ive got a 3.88 and i think im fine for consideration. grades don't get you in, they just allow u to be considered.

tennisdude: My thing was MIT's MITE2S program last summer

manonfire: I had a 3.9 when I applied for harvard, so no you are not screwed no worries :)

I just broke my 4.0 record and I'm devastated...I have a total bitch for a teacher in AP Calculus BC who doesn't give me any points for trying and working my ass off in her class and now I have a b from her class on my first semester grades for senior year. ****ed!
