How many b's?

on my transcript it just says A or B not A+ or A-; but the majority of my b's were 89 or 88 and the majority of my A's were 95 and above.
I have also had one C, Spanish 3 Hon., I had a really bad teacher.
Do you think that my transcript is unfair for just stating a letter grade and not + or -, because an 89 is harder to get than an 80 and an 99 is harder to get than a 90.

I don't think that colleges would care if its an A+ or an A-...etc. If they did then they would probably just require that all transcripts have the numerical grade on it. Besides, I think that most high schools don't put +/- on transcripts.

i thought in that amherst video those ppl said that, 'oh wow 3 b-'s i, mean if they were b's or something'?

I think that it is unfair since when I get a 99 in my math classes its not the same as a 90 and when I get an 89 in Spanish its not the same as an 80.
Who thinks they should change the gpa scale to a % of all the grades averaged?

You're right, that is really unfair. I think all high schools and colleges should drop the A/B/C system and the 4.0 gpa and just do everything (grades, gpa) in terms of 100 with decimals. It would simplify so many things, no conversions, etc.

no way...i always study just enough to get over a 90
it gives me more time to do other things :)

"I think all high schools and colleges should drop the A/B/C system and the 4.0 gpa and just do everything (grades, gpa) in terms of 100 with decimals."

that's exactly what my high school does ... we have a 100-pt system, with decimals, and honors/AP classses get an added 5% weight at the end of the year. :D

bump....

hey i have a question about this whole grades business. throughout my high school career ive gotten all A's, basically, but weighted. the midyr report is unweighted, and i definately think i bombed my calculus AB midterm today, so ill probably get a C :( for my calculus average.

will it sabotage me?

Grades MEAN NOTHING

0 B's = deferral

sorry, bitterness coming through. But in all honesty, if your grades are decent, top 10% or so, it is only EC's that matter

i dunno about admissions process but i applied to harvard with 1 B and 1 B+ in my sophmore year, 3 Bs and 1 B+ junior year, and this first semester I have 3 B+s. Thats a total of 9 Bs (4 Bs, 5 B+s) from all honors/AP courses. A B- = a big no no for any individual. So as long as you manage not to pull a B-you're in good shape.

But I take the most challenging courses. This year I have 6 APs with well balanced grades of 3 A-s and 3 B+s, on top of helping run a local convention all through the month of November. Just getting straight A's means nothing cuz it's not going to tell much about your personality to colleges. I managed to take a risk by taking a leadership role as computer technican for the local convention, which I have discussed in depth for interview and will have a teacher's recommendation to back me up.

Recs and Interviews are great ways for harvard to weed out the boring study all day long students cuz honestly, there are so many of these students that they are replaceable. But the students who take risks and manage to show promise are the ones who manage to shine through personality wise. These are most likely Harvard material students -- unique individuals who separate themselves from their peers.

I've taken a total of 6 Honors and 9 APs. Those 9 APs were in a span of two years. I managed to rebound this semester w/ 3 B+s from last year's 3 Bs. It's all about effort. I know I took risks and I'm glad I did because it's just who I am -- competitive and motivated to challenge myself.

um to answer the original ?, i get one b-range grade every year (9th-12th). i got b's in english from 10-12th and a B in Spanish III in 9th. for harvard, i honestly think grades aren't everything. i didn't do so well in english, but i made up for it by taking the hardest science classes my school possibly offers and hard math classes and getting a's. so don't stress out about b's unless it's a subject you're really good at.
