Sure, it's possible to do. You just might not have a life for the quarter.

If you're an incoming freshman, you should take just 3 classes. Maybe a seminar too. It's just easier so that you'll be a happy, socializing person. You'll have the next 4 years to take 5+ classes.

Semester vs. quarter classes aren't really different. People say that quarter classes are faster. But it's not like going to a semester school or a quarter school will increase the number of classes you'll take. (for example, you might take 5 classes/semester, 2 semesters a year and that's 10 classes. But for a quarter school, it'll be 3-4 classes/quarter, 3 quarters a year and that's 9-12 classes. About the same.)

Think in terms of units rather than classes. Some classes are worth more units than others. On average 15 units a quarter is what you will need to graduate in four years. Don't over do it your first quarter; you need time to adjust to being away from home in a new environment. Winter quarter is a good time to take some extra units or more difficult classes. If you are prone to spring fever plan ahead. Lots of freshman blow their first year GPA due to too many units their first quarter, and a low spring GPA.

i've taken as few as 12, as many as 26 (that was fun)

my usual plan of attack was to sign myself up for as many classes as my units would allow (19.5 pre-term), attend the first week of classes, and drop the ones i didn't like. this practice wreaked havoc on completing sequential courses (i start ochem as a freshman, finished as a junior), but at least i was a pretty happy camper, taking only the classes i liked :)

i took 4 classes and a freshman seminar first quarter.
5 and a freshman seminar second and i'm doing the same right now.

the thing is though, you can only sign up for 19.5 units before quarter starts so you'd only be able to add the 5th class first day of school which kinda sucks cause the class you want might be full by then, so you should check it out, see which classes fill up faster and sign up for those first.

after classes start, the limit is 22 units. so yeah, you can't really go over that.

22 units (including a 0-unit seminar ;]) and tutoring for five hours/wk. I also play intramurals and volunteer to play smash with my suitemates every so often.
