how many classes per term?

How many classes per term does the average MIT student take? I think it's 4. but I'm not sure. How common is it to take more than the average courseload?

my friend is taking 6, although that is an unusually big load.

I love the MIT boards because people respond so fast.

Thanks staticsoliloquy.

I know of people who have taken 7/term. I plan on sticking to 4 though. I hear it's plenty.

I take five per term (some 60-70 units), as well as extracurriculars. It's not too bad, if you don't mind not being in your room for 12+ hours every day. One of my former teammates, now an alum, used to take 8 classes per term and graduated with enough credits for two completly non-overlapping majors and three minors, but he was insanely smart and totally not average. I'd say 4-5 is average, depending on how many are technical and how many are HASS.

I'm assuming when you guys say average, you mean "MIT average." Cuz if you're in MIT, you're NOT average.

a "standard" class is 12 units, and a "standard" courseload is 48 units, which makes 4 classes, give or take some leeway for UROPs for credit, seminars, and the occasional 15-unit class. there's a lot of variation as to whether a class will actually take you as many hrs as units, of course. i've been averaging 3-4 actual classes each term and then an extra seminar or HASS; most people i know take more than 48 units, sometimes by quite a lot. my 54 this term feels relatively easy and wimpy, but different people have different tolerances.

taffy, what's the point of your post?

not only is it irrelevent and make little sense, but the original post did say "average MIT student".

I wouldn't quite say "different people have different tolerances" as much as "different classes require different amounts of time". I.E., 6.001 is 15 units, but it clearly takes more time than, say, 6.004, which is also 15 units. Similarly, you could strategize your HASS selection to make sure that you get one that doesn't take up much time. "Major Poets" took up far less than 12 hours a week for me, while say, 5.112 took up far more than 12 hours a week.

It did? Oooops, I was blind when I strolled down...

Are there psets for every class you take, and are most of them generally very hard and time-consuming?

No. 6.004, for example, has no psets. It just has 8 labs and 5 quizzes. And 14.01/14.02 psets, for example, were relatively easy.

are 14.01/14.02 easy without any background in economics? You can take those for HASS-Ds right?

Also, can I assume that everything under the GIRs are 12 units each? For early sophomore standing, to complete 25% of the 4-year requirements, is this definitely 8 classes, or more for the 1st semester? How do you check the no. of units for each class? Thanks!

4 classes on aveage

14.01 this semester was ridiculously hard compared to last semester, but you don't need any background to take the class-that's why it's introductory

courses are listed with their units in the course catalogue. all GIRs are 12 units. to get sophomore standing, you have to come in with credit and/or take some advanced standing exams to get enough credit, since the first term credit limit is 54 units.

and i guess i failed at implying that different classes don't necessarily take the time they claim to. 6.170, unified, j.lab, 6.001, are notorious for going over, while i have yet to find a hass class that took me more than 6 hrs a week, on average. different people also really do have different tolerances, tho; while i don't feel particularly hosed from 4 straight classes, two of which have lab components, several of my friends have wondered how i manage without even a HASS to break up things. shrug

Hrm thanks=) Am I right to say that 96 units are enough for early soph standing?

"without even a HASS to break things up" (paraphrase)

Aren't you required to take a HASS every semester?

is it true that most people taking unified take only unified?

I take 4 classes per semester, although one semester only took 3.

Some of my classes have been 15 units, while most are 12.

sorry, I'm not an MIT applicant (sounded waaay too intense for me when I was deciding where to apply), I just like to lurk around on some MIT threads. I have a weird question: how the heck do you guys manage to remember what the course numbers stand for? 6.001, 14.01, etc. I guess that question also goes for the building numbers and Concentration numbers. I guess that's why I'm not destined for MIT =P
