How many classes do you need to take at U of R to graduate? I know that they have a flexible curriculum and they have clusters, but I wasn't sure if there is a certain number of classes that students needed to take

I believe to graduate in most majors it is 32 classes or about 128 credits. It is by semester so fall and spring. Each cluster is 3 classes minimum and majors vary depending on the depth. Science is more than humanities because of less prerequisites. I am going there next year so this is what i understand to be true.

The clusters at UR are not totally unrestricted. The 3 clusters cannot be all in one school, e.g., you cannot take just all humanities clusters. Students also have to pay attention to their majors' requirements. So the school-wide requirement is the CAS (freshman writing course) and 3 clusters, the departmental requirement is much more specific.

Since the curriculum is flexible, many students would course shop - sign up for whatever interests them and fits into their schedules, sit in for the first week or two, drop the ones they don't like until they have manageable course loads.

As in most schools, students need approval to sign on to more than 17 credits. With most classes being 3 or 4 credits, they are basically hoping that students stay within a 4 to 5 course load.

Don't know if it is still true, but although the freshman writing course is required, it was not required with a SAT verbal score of 750 or higher. This may have changed with the new SAT.

However even if you have the SAT score, you still would have to appeal it... At which point you will still have to take another writing intensive class
