How many classes + UROP?

So I just got back from orientation where I registered for classes. Originally I had just wanted to take 3 classes + UROP (Orgo, Spanish, and the Honors First Year Writing ). However, my advisor told me to take Another 3/4 credit course so I signed up for a first-year seminar.

I am just worried about time-management since I am at 18 credits now. Did anyone else’s advisor make them take 4 classes + UROP? Is it because I am in the LSA honors program that my advisor would tell me to take 4 classes??

(Side note: Yes I have already been accepted and agreed to join UROP. I will be doing research in Health Sciences)

Did you find your research project already? Or did you just personally decide that you wanted to do Health Sciences.

I got back from orientation last week and my advisor recommended me to take 4 classes + a required Ross seminar, and then I took another credit on top of that (so I have 17.5 of courses). And I’m doing UROP for work-study

The reason why they would tell you to do that is because of the 3 week period that you have at the start of the school year to decide whether or not you want to add/drop classes. Dropping a class is a lot easier than adding a class, and so the idea I’m sure your advisor had was that if you find that the schedule you have is too much work, then no harm done, just drop a class. However, if you scheduled too light, then you might not develop a proper study habit for when times do start to get rough academic wise and adding a class after school has already started puts you behind.

Personally I’d think of UROP as an extracurricular (as opposed to a class). An 18 credit schedule with UROP is totally doable, it’s just that a chunk of your extracurricular time will be spent in the lab as opposed to clubs/sports, etc. That doesn’t mean you can’t do those things in addition to research, but it does mean that if you were interested in joining 5 clubs and a sport, that probably won’t happen without you getting overwhelmed.

Take those first 3 weeks to really examine your limits and decide whether it is too overwhelming or not.

Oh good, that makes me feel much better and makes a lot of sense! And no, @hailbate I don’t believe we formally get assigned a research project until Oct. but I selected Health S as my first choice and Life S as my second.
Thanks guys!
