What is the ideal #? I have heard of people applying to just 1 or up to 20. Right now I'm thinking about 8-12 what do you think? How many safeties/reaches/matches?

Its dependent on the person. The cookie cutter answer is 1-2 safety schools you know you could get into and afford to go to, 2-3 match schools where you’ve got a good chance to get into, and 1-2 reach schools where you probably won’t get into but might.

I only ended up applying to 4

10 is a good number. I have 1 safety, a couple matches, and some reaches. But that cuz i REALLY wanna get into a good college. Lol

It really depends on the person. I know people that applied to one (got in ED) others that applied to 40+. Personally I am applying to two schools with rolling admission, two through EA and one through ED. If I get into my ED school I am done applying, if I don’t I will probably apply to around 25 more schools through RD.

There is no right answer. DD is applying for 3, two are matches and one is a reach. She is taking her ACT for a second time in Sept and depending on those results she might be sending out more apps where here scores might get her into honors programs. I am so looking forward to this all being behind us!

I’m probably applying to four reaches, two matches, and four safeties because I’ll need merit aid. But my list seems to change every day.

I am applying to 3 safeties, 1 match, and 6 reaches. I justify the lack of more matches because I am applying to the Honors Colleges at all of my safeties and consider those matches.

I’m an upcoming senior and I’m only applying to 2 colleges. I’m applying to UPenn (my reach school) through ED. The other school I’m applying to is UT Austin as I qualify for the automatic admissions for UT.

I figured that if I don’t get into UPenn, it would be illogical to go to another out-of-state school (I’m also not a fan of the other in-state TX schools like Rice, Baylor, A&M, SMU, etc.). There’s no other school (other than UPenn, of course) that I would prefer over UT.

I agree with ArtsyGirl and think it really depends on the person. I know someone who only applied to 3 (UCSD, UCSB, UCSC) and got into 2 (UCSD and UCSB), all schools probably being a match for her, UCSC being a low match which is weird she didn’t get in. But anyway, if you wanna be on the safe side then add at least 2 safeties to your list

I agree with the posts above saying that it depends on the person. Personally I am applying to 3 safeties, 5 matches, and 2 reaches. One girl I know applied to 19 different schools! I’m not sure which of those were safety, matches, and reaches, but you can see that everyone varies. My cousin applied to 6 and my brother applied to 5. I think it also has to do with how confident you feel in getting into your fav schools.

I’ll be applying to ~12 schools.

I’ll probably end up applying to around 15, with something like half of them being reaches haha. Although there are those reaches I’m applying to because I really, really, really want to go there and there are those that I’m either just interested in or there’s pressure to apply there.

Probably 7-8, 10 being an absolute max. Just haven’t found that golden safety yet so I’m applying to more because of that reason

I applied to 20, but I only did because I received a lot of free apps. It was a stupid reason and it was annoying but I guess it was nice to have a lot of options after I got accepted.

I kind of used the shotgun approach and applied to 12. I only applied one “safety” school - my state school. All of the rest were the “lottery” schools, so I figured I could improve my chances of being a fit for at least one if I applied to all of 'em.

I applied to 16, and I’m glad I did. I had 12 different financial packages to compare and look over with my parents. For financial reasons it made sense. My friend applied to 8: 3 rejections, 3 waitlists, and 2 acceptances. And neither of the financial aid packages she received were feasible for her family. She will be taking a gap year and trying again. Better safe than sorry when it comes to such a massive investment.

I totally agree with allaboutbooks.

I would say that 20 would be too much. Just because no one really has time to write so many essays…

And LOL at the person who said they knew someone who applied to 40. That’s insane and a bit hard to believe lol.

I planned on applying to around 22 schools of varying admissions difficulty, but in the end I applied to one school SCEA. I feel that, if I did have to apply to more schools, I probably would’ve shortened my list some.

I’m planning on applying to at least six or seven schools. About three of them I consider a reach but it’s worth a shot.

I’ll be applying to ~12 schools.
