Planned on 3 safeties, 4 matches, 4 reaches. A variety of low/high for each.
Applied EA to a reach (my top choice), got in and could afford it. Applied no where else.
Would definitely recommend EA to help narrow your list. If you get in and the finances are good then you can take other less desirable schools off your list.
D16-started with 15, withdrew 3. Final application list was 12. 2 reaches, 3 safety. EA for most. 12 was too many. I recommend no more than 8. 2 reaches, 4matches, 2safeties. Do not apply to any school if you can’t afford it. Definitely apply to one match EA or rolling admission.

3 reaches, 5 matches, 1 safety. I felt like I didn’t need more than the one safety - my state flagship - because it had everything I needed from a safety school: full-ride scholarships, honors college, good programs, etc…
Applied to a reach, a match, and a safety EA. Got into all three, which let me shorten my RD list considerably and make it top-heavy, since being shut out of college was no longer a concern. Ended up applying RD to to one match and 4 reaches in order to have financial options.
2 reach 2 match 2 safety but 1 match became closer to a financial reach when OOS tuition went up more than IS. Got into them all. Chose the other match.

Got into 2 safeties. Rejected from a reach. Likely from another reach (an ivy).
Would have applied to more reaches if parents would’ve allowed me lol

That being said, the one reach who replied (with a $65K price tag) gave only a $5K scholarship so far. They are leading us to believe there will be more to come from them.
Two of the safeties gave roughly 70% scholarships. Those are home schools, so no room and board. The other two safeties - away schools - gave about 30%.
One target gave about 40%. The next gave about 33%. Another gave about 20% (but they have a lower tuition). And we are waiting for one more (who has a higher price tag).
Seems like we should hear from just about everyone within another week.

I’m still waiting on my test scores so don’t know exactly what my reaches will be but at this point it looks like 2-3 reaches, 4 matches and one safety. I’m applying all early action so if things go much worse than expected, I can possibly consider adding one more safety

Don’t like to call them safeties since I really liked the schools I chose and safety feels almost like a diminutive term. Hoping that I get into a reach thought!
