How many colleges did you apply to?

Ok so I'm a junior and I wanted some input from seniors about the whole "college app process", there are so many schools right now that I want to know how many colleges you applied to, my dad and I are talking and he was like, " I would apply to 10-15 colleges". I disagree I feel like it is more like 7--9

IMO, if you apply to 10-15 you haven't done enough homework about your schools before the deadlines. You should be able to get a general idea of what type of school you want, what location you want, and the general academic area you want to focus on(or an undecided major where you need to focus on colleges that are very diverse so you'll have lots of options)... and if you have that should be less then 15 and for the most part less then 10.

I applied to 9 not because I couldn't narrow it down more but because I need some merit aid and it is a crap shoot as to where I'll get it. So, 6 of my 9 schools are private which are fairly generous with aid and we'll see what happens. My three state schools(not all my state schools) are my "they're reasonable without any aid" type schools.

Most people I know are applying to 4-7 schools but I think most people on here apply to more.

Good luck.

Four. All private schools. All reach schools.
My parents want me to apply to more, because all four are reach schools, but I've already been accepted to my first choice and the other three are only there in case they decide to give me better financial aid. I disagreed with the whole notion of having a safety school, and I guess my mentality worked out pretty well.

Outburst, There have actually been studies done that show that people that apply to over 10 schools actually do worse in the admissions process --- as Anovice points out it takes a huge amount of time and effort to really target admissions. Not to mention the application fees for all of those schools really do add up quickly.

By the way, you might want to show this article to your dad - it's about the work involved with applying to lots of schools:

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/issue/041220/misc/20college.htm

Good luck!

7-9 is fine; 10-15 is too many.

Ecliptica, you lucked out.

I applied to 7. I originally was planning on applying to about 14 schools. I elminated schools like Georgia Tech and Case Western because of their locations and I prefer smaller schools. Try eliminating some schools.

SUNY - Geneseo, Stony Brook, Binghamton (Pretty much safeties)
RIT - Safety
RPI - Match (I'm most likely going there)
Cornell - Reach
Tufts - Reach

Well I applied to 8 schools, not counting the 6 CUNY and 4 SUNY, to which I applied just for the hell of it

Thanks guys, that really gives me some insight!

I am applying to 8 altogether. I already applied to 3, and the first response I got was an acceptance from SFSU. It's not one of my top picks and its not even like my middle picks, but its an acceptance and I'm definately happy I know I am going to college this fall!!!

hmm..
I applied to 13..
I couldn't help it.
it cost about ................................................600+ bucks
but who cares, I would rather not regret after my favorite schools' deadlines.
cuz people sometimes regret during January-March, "Oh..geese I wish I had turned it in". but it's too late anyway.
so I applied to 13 and do not regret at all. It's once in a life time.

I'm applying to 8, I already applied to 5. Plus two were free online, so I didn't have to go into debt paying the app fees :). I'm applying to so many cuz a lot are 30-40k (which I really can't afford) so I'm seeing who gives me enough money to attend.

I'm applying to 13 (14?). This is including all the UCs though. I did my research junior yr & during the sumer and started filling out my apps pretty early (around august) and finished before school started. If I had a chance though, I would take back more than half of those apps, not because I haven't done my homework about the school, as anovice pointed out earlier, but because I had been accepted to UIUC, a school which I will probably choose over the majority of the other colleges on my list.

Back in the day, when I was a high school senior, I applied to eight schools, and I should have applied to less. I applied to Harvard, Brown, Notre Dame, USC, Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, and UCI. I got in to all but H, but I knew that I had no intention of going to Brown or USC, so I should have crossed those off my list before sendint out the apps. Harvard was just one of those schools where I was curious to see if I'd get in, and I pretty much knew I wasn't going to go to Berkeley because I never liked the city. But with the UC application making it so easy to apply to multiple schools, I figured that I might as well.

Ten

In four different countries

8 is the perfect number

ive got about 5 reaches, 2 matches, and 1 safety

go 8! lol good idea

8 colleges

last year, I applied to 7, and it should've been 5, but that just seemed like too few! lol.

George Mason, James Madison, Virginia Tech, William and Mary, UVA, NYU, and Macalester. I should've skipped the NYU and Macalester ones, no chance I would've gone there even if I got in, and I could have left out Mason, b/c that was super saftey-ish for me.

wow i think i'm only applying to like 4 or 5... of course i only have one or two reaches and the rest of them I'm pretty sure I'll get it. We'll just see what kind of scholarships i get...

Cool guys...thanks for the large response, right know I'm looking at about 3 Safeties, 3 match, and 5 reaches...
