How many colleges did your kid apply to this year?

13, but 5 were UCs on the same application.

2 safeties with different strengths
6 ~matches
5 reaches of various degrees
No ED/EA due to SAT retest needs. The lower
than anticipated initial SAT scores drove the wide
range and number of applications.

Thus far, we have 2 likely letters (Regents) but are otherwise
still awaiting results.

2 safeties (two public–already have significant merit money)
4 matches (all private–possible merit money at one)
5 reaches (all private–no hope for merit money :stuck_out_tongue: )

i already got accepted to my favorite reach EA, but i need to weigh my options money-wise. i think that should be right…

12

2 safeties EA/priority I actually liked, both with $
3 public matches and 2 high safeties because my counselor wanted me to
2 matches I love, accepted to 1 so far
2 reaches and 1 high match my parents love

So really, I could’ve applied to the safeties EA + the matches and my parents’ picks RD and lowered my number from 12 to 7, but I didn’t really mind doing the applications and everyone ended up happy with my final list.

My son

3 could go either ways
4 don’t see why he wouldn’t get ins
1 if all else fails at least he is in somewhere

swdad1, I like your attitude. :)

4 EA- definitely the way to go…
1 reach-

My D submitted 9 apps; two years ago my S submitted 6.

2 safety (1 acceptance)
5 match (1 acceptance)
2 reach (1 acceptance)

She has yet to hear from 6 schools. She really didn’t have a clear-cut favorite, but now one school has nosed ahead of the others and 2 have fallen back based upon the acceptances received thus far.

I believe I do not have any offspring.

All EA/ED.

1 - ED - slight reach
1 reach
2 matches
1 safety

Got into the ED, so withdrew other apps. Heard back from 2 of them anyway, accepted to the safety and 1 match. As for the other 2… we’ll never know.

Son had 13 on his list.

Sent in 5 total with the rest ready to go if not accepted at his first choice ED

1 match/reach ED Accepted
1 match EA Withdrawn
3 SUNYs (1 was a safety) Withdrew all 3 but crossed in the mail with one and was accepted to his SUNY safety.

The others were 3 match/reach, 3 match, 2 safety

total of 14

3 reaches (waiting to hear)
9 safety/matches (merit $ and honors college/program recieved from all)
2 Canadian (accepted at 1, waiting for other)

imo we could have left off 4 easily, but son decided to go ahead with apps.

12, if you don’t mind that I am a student rather than a parent :)

1 free app super-safety
(accepted w/ $$)
2 safeties
(accepted to all)
3 realistic – 1 of which is rolling, but I heard back too late to avoid applying to all the safeties
(accepted to 1, waiting on others)
4 reaches
(waiting)
2 super-reaches – deferred by one of these SCEA
(waiting)

My S applied to 7:

2 safties
2 matches
3 reaches
Accepted to both safties & matches–waiting on 3 reaches.

Average class of 2009 data from our affluent suburban NJ public HS:

Average number of schools applied to: 7.1
Average number of acceptances per applicant: 3.8

12% applied to only 1 school
9% applied to 2 or 3 schools
26% applied to 4 - 6 schools
35% applied to 7-10 schools
14% applied to 11-15 schools
4% applied to 16 or more schools

S2 Applied to 12 - We cast a wide net, and the strategy worked. he’s waiting for all the responses before he makes a decision:

4 Safeties - All accepted EA with merit $
4 Matches - 2 EA Acceptances with merit $, 2 Waiting
2 Reaches - 1 waiting; 1 accepted EA (no $)
1 High Reach - waiting
1 Super high reach - applied ED / denied

Ten for my daughter. She’s heard back from 5 so far. All acceptances, but only one that there’s a strong possibility of her attending. Previously she had her heart set on one OOS that had rolling admission and the decision came in early. But, we’re hoping she’ll choose one of the in-state schools. The five remaining are targets and reaches requiring essays, teacher rec. and stronger stats all the way around. So, we shall see!

1

At breakfast the day after the counselor sent the parents the “if you still want to apply to the community college for free you have to get the papers to me NOW” email.

We have two years more before we have to get serious about college (well by then they will be transfer) applications.

This weekend I’m cracking the whip over Happykid to get the summer job applications out. It is such torture, that I can’t imagine what it would have been like if she’d applied to any colleges/universities where she actually had to write essays. I am truly in awe of the parental fortitude displayed by so many of you!

Too many.

He ended up applying to 11 and is six-for-six thus far on acceptances.

S2 had ten on the list, dropped three after EA results, added one, so ultimately applied to eight.
1 flagship likely admit (accepted)
1 private likely admit
5 reachy (in varying degrees) so far, one acceptance, one deferral
1 mega reach

S1 had nine, dropped three after EA, added one, net of seven.
1 flagship likely admit (accepted)
3 EA crapshoots (accepted EA at two, one deferral and then waitlisted)
1 RD low reach (accepted)
2 RD crapshoots (rejected)

ODD applied to 5: reach (accepted w/excellent FA), 2 matches (one acceptance and one waitlist) and 2 safety (both accepted). She went to her reach.

ODS applied to 3 - two matches and one safety. Accepted to all three and attends one of the matches.

YDD applied to 7 - BFA programs all very selective. She was accepted to one BFA and to three others academically. She is attending the BFA program (Macaulay Honors) and is looking to transfer for her Sophomore year. Six transfer applications - two reaches and 4 matches. We are waiting…

YDS has 6 on his list right now - 3 reaches, one match and 2 safeties. These might changes in the next 8 months.
