Question is pretty straightforward enough. Right now I have a prospective list of 11-most of them are actually reach schools.

Cornell U
Duke U
Georgetown U
Northwestern U IL
Stanford U
U Calif Berkeley
U Calif Los Angeles
U Chicago
U Pennsylvania
U Washington
West Point Academy

Just wondering how many colleges CC'ers applied to, I want to shorten this list quite a bit. And for the people who applied to a high amount of colleges, when did you first start writing your admission essays?

I honestly don’t think 11 is unreasonable. I applied to 9 as a first year and got into 2, waitlisted at 1.

Add a safety or two, as well as a match or two and you should be good.

about the essays, i didn’t start early enough and did them generally within a week of the due date of the application. i definitely encourage you to start as soon as possible.

I only ended up applying to 4, actually. I had originally planned on 6, but I got into my top choice EA, so I didn’t bother finishing the other 2 apps (yay procrastination!)

I don’t think 11 is bad. I’m applying to 10. One reach, three safeties, and six matches.
You need to add some safeties to your list (somewhere you have stats above their average and a high acceptance rate) and some matches (places where you have stats at least at their average and are likely to get in).

I applied to 20 and got into 8. I thought about my essays all throughout the fall semester but did real work on them november, december, and january. As you can imagine those months were hell, and I believe that if I had started my essays earlier I would have gotten into more reaches.l (I was WLed at a lot and I suspect it was because of my weak essays).

Currently on my list I have 1 safety, 3 matches and 7 reaches. I know that’s a lot of reaches, but it increases my chances of getting into a reach college. University of Washington (Seattle) is my only safety because I will virtually get a full-ride there.

I only applied to 4. I planned to apply to more, but I just narrowed it down a lot because I was applying as a music major and you have to audition, which means the more schools you apply to, the more traveling to auditions you have to do and the more school you miss. I wanted to cut down on that.

University of Central Arkansas
University of Central Florida
Florida State University
University of Georgia
University of Houston
University of Minnesota- Twin Cities

I’m looking to apply to 10, but I dont know if I should consider going up to 12 or 15, simply because of the selectivity of the schools that I am looking at.

Right now I want to apply to:
Lottery School: 1
Reach Schools: 3 (High, Middle, and Low)
Match Schools: 5 (2 High, 2 Middle, 1 Low)
Safety: 1 (Big State U)

My S applied to 4: 1 ED, 1 Rolling, and 2 RD. Not accepted at ED, accepted at the other three. ED was a reach; others were matches and one slight reach. Applied to fewer than most because of major (neuroscience), geographic preference, and wanted an urban campus.

D applied to 13 (not including Navy) so I guess that’s 14. Accepted at 2, WL at 4, rejected at 8. And I really thought she had a realistic list that had been vetted by her GC.

If I had to do it again, I would have had her do zero reaches and many many more matches.

I applied to 14 schools, 9 in the United States and 5 in the United Kingdom.

If you would like a list:

Brown University (Rejected)
The University of Chicago (Waitlisted)
Northwestern University (Rejected)
New York University (Accepted)
Wake Forest University (beginning fall 2011 :D, so obviously Accepted)
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Accepted)
Elon University (Accepted)
Appalachian State University (Accepted)
Wingate University (Accepted)

The University of York (Conditionally Accepted)
The University of St. Andrews (Unconditionally Accepted)
Durham University (Rejected)
Warwick University (Rejected)
University College of London (Rejected)
