How many colleges should D23 apply to when seeking merit aid?

GW added the Corcoran School of Art not too long ago (was separate art school earlier). While it isn’t a big art school it does have a decent selection of art classes. My daughter loved GW (the campus, DC, the students) and would have gone there I think if the art school had been bigger. I think she would have gone if art was not her primary focus. I don’t know much about STEM there though.

Good luck to your daughter! I’m sure she will have some amazing choices!

Best of luck to your daughter as well! Post updates on her experience at VCUArts!

@twoinanddone mentioned Goucher, which might feel small based on your comments. Would it still feel that way with the options available in the consortium? But there are some larger institutions in the Baltimore Collegetown consortium. These would allow her to take classes at Johns Hopkins or the Maryland Institute College of Art should their art or physics offerings need supplementation.

  • Loyola Maryland: $82% with $20,185 → $50k with about 3800 undergrads
  • UMBC with about 11k undergrads
  • Towson with about 17k undergrads

Another consortium possibility is Atlanta. The ARCHE consortium allows students to take classes at other member institutions, including Georgia Tech and Savannah College of Art & Design’s Atlanta campus. And with the consortium, perhaps some of the smaller schools might feel bigger?

  • Emory: 11% with $23,521 → $51k with about 7k undergrads
  • Agnes Scott (all-women): 95% with $32,004 → $28k with about 1k undergrads
  • Oglethorpe: about 1400 undergrads (not in the table, but I know it offers a flagship match program, and your daughter may well get beyond that)
  • Spelman (HBCU & all-women): 7% with $19,909 → $27k with about 2400 undergrads

NEU should definitely be in play. I have heard about $32K in merit for this year. Might be in your budget. I would reach out to the AO plus you have another one in there.

We are located in Baltimore and have spent many hours on the Baltimore college campuses for high school sports and music performances across a lot of years, so those schools feel like “been there done that” to her. She wants to spread her wings and get farther away from home.

Will check out the programs in the consortium in Atlanta (which ironically is where she was born)! GA Tech/SCAD is a particularly interesting thought.

I would be thrilled if she would get that type of money from NU! Love the co-op program and integration with School of the Museum of Fine Arts, plus they would take her AP/community college credits. D22 is also going to NU this fall with a year’s worth of credits, so between only paying for three years of tuition, plus getting paid for essentially a year’s worth of co-ops, NU with a scholarship landed right in the sweet spot of our budget. Fingers crossed for D23, but definitely not a slam dunk after this year’s 7% NU acceptance rate!

Have her submit her art portfolio to every school she applies to. My son’s friend (strong stats but test score slightly lower than your daughter - still 1500+) did this and got in everywhere he applied - no super high reaches but did get into UVA out of state. He was a strong student but probably top 20 percent of the class. He was applying as an engineering major most places so the art portfolio helped him stand out. Although Ga Tech does not provide much in the way of merit, they do offer both a Stamps (full ride) and Provost (half tuition) scholarship plus the College of Sciences offers a similar half tuition scholarship. To be eligible you need to apply EA. I would put GT on her list as the acceptance rate for women is significantly higher than men and their industrial design major might be appealing.

Never would have thought about GA Tech but it’s a great idea! It looks like the Hispanic population is underrepresented there too, so hopefully being a Latina will work in her favor as well as her art portfolio.

It absolutely will help to be both female and Hispanic. They are actively trying to increase their URM, female and first generation population. Your daughter will check (at least) 2 of those 3 boxes. We are in state and I have a child there and it has been a great fit for him. My Junior will likely be applying there as well.

Congrats to your son! And thanks for that insight on GT’s diversity objectives - good to know!

Congrats to your son.

I think this is incorrect.

https://scholarships.asu.edu/estimator suggests that 4.0 / 1560 / National Scholar (NMF or CBNRP) / non-AZ resident gives a net price of $31,436 at ASU, not really a full ride.

That’s right. This has nothing to do with “fairness”. It’s about whether your kid has a hook that’s attractive to that college, where it’s very much in their interest to take your kid over so many others in their applicant pool.

I stand corrected. For some reason I thought I read that ASU provided full tuition (I mistyped - not full ride) scholarships for CBNRP students.

I haven’t had a chance to read all the posts, and I do think you should mostly focus on schools where your D has a high chance of acceptance with auto merit. However, you might consider Vanderbilt because (1) they do give a number of full tuition scholarships and your D’s art portfolio sounds interesting and (2) they are one of the few private meets need colleges that do not use the non-custodial parent’s income/assets to calculate financial aid.

ASU used to provide full tuition for CB NHRP- it changed this year.

Thanks @AnonDad2026 … I could have sworn I saw that somewhere!

I’m extremely curious what schools guarantee a full tuition scholarship. If you want to name it or explain I’d love it, but if not, at least explain what that looked like / how you knew this was possible, etc.

@elena13, I keep reading comments that Vanderbilt doesn’t require noncustodial parent financials, but it appears that they do require both the FAFSA and CSS profile. Is the CSS profile only for the custodial parent? Also, the NPC suggests that both parents are taken into account. If that wasn’t the case Vandy would definitely be on our list!
