For those of you applying 8+, by the end of the day, do you really know why the heck you want to go to all of them? I have trouble answering some colleges' question of "what motivated you to apply?"

At most 10, at least 8. My school is crazy and no one has safeties that normal people could consider safeties, meaning they're ridiculously selective. Everyone usually gets into their respective safety schools, which must mean that the college counselors know what they're talking about, but if I told you what my GC considers my safety schools, you wouldn't believe me.

Have you all visited these colleges that you plan on applying to?

It's important. My D had a big list but after touring or doing drive-bys she was able to go from 13 to 8.

I wholeheartedly agree 1000% that a college visit is critical.

However, I don't think a visit is cheaper than the cost of an app. One application is approximately equal to a tank of gas. Then, when you add hotel and meals, the visit becomes much more expensive.

But it's really only because I need a lot of financial aid, I want to be sure I'll get something, and I want to have a lot of options to pick from.

A safety is an in-state public with your matching test scores.

Really? I didn't think a safety MATCHED test scores. I thought a safety is where the student exceeds the 75% range of scores.

I'm not trying to be snarky. I'm really seeking clarification in order to understand.

One safety is enough, as long as you apply early!

Why apply to 3 safeties at once?
[/quote]

Ideally, I'd agree. But, there are reports of kids being rejected from safeties because the school "can tell" it's a safety. The school doesn't extend the acceptance because it predicts the kids won't attend anyway. Based on that, I'd say one safety is a little risky.

3 reaches
3 matches (one is a match/reach: Penn State, if she can get into University Park, which is a reach, otherwise second choice was Altoona)
1 safety

= Lucky #7

That's D's October applications. If by chance she doesn't receive ANY offers, there are back-ups. Why invest the money in October, see where you land early - like I said, if there ARE no offers in the first 7 universities (which I highly doubt).

That's why it's so important to apply early.

But then again, all of her choices are rolling admission except one or two, which promise a response by the first week of December.

Just with those 7, I calculated about $250 in application fees. Luckily we have been keeping up with the FREE score reports so it looks like I may not have to spend the $10 additional to send scores - to each college.
