Hi guys, so I know that Amherst requires each student to take 32 courses in order to graduate, and the normal course load for each student would thus be 4 courses per semester. But are people allowed to take, say 5/6 courses each semester so that they can graduate in 3 years? Has anyone at Amherst done this before?
I’m just asking this because my friend from China who will be applying as transfer from a community college in China may not be able to transfer all of her credits of one year’s worth to Amherst if she does get accepted.

You have to ask special permission in order to take more than 4. My D thought she would want more until she saw how much work (including outside committment) each class took. Her friends who did 5 courses all said they wouldn't do it again.

If you are an incoming freshman, you cannot take extra courses to graduate in 3 years, but obviously if your transferring, things would be different. You really don't want to take 5 courses more than once or twice and you should make sure each course isnt too hard. 6 is impossible and suicide.

your friends case is unique so he'd have to ask
