Hello gang,
At my county college, I was able to handle 23 credits a semester and still managed to get all A's. I know Rutgers courses will be very different, maybe more challenging or time consuming I have no idea. I know everyone is different and it depends on the courses and all that jazz, so I would just appreciate it if you guys can share to me the most credits you took a semester, how manageable was it, and did you think you could handle more. Any additional information would also be great.

i am going as a freshmen in the fall, and they told us to have more than 16 credits was pushing it.

i took 16 credits last semester (five classes) and worked 10 hours a week, and i found that to be very exhausting. i would usually leave my dorm at 9am and not come back for more than 20 minutes, until 10:30pm and stay up until 3-4am doing papers and stuff, then wake up at 8, tuesdays, wednesdays, and thursdays.

when you first get here, it’d be better to take less credits that you can handle than more, you know? then you can just add in more credits the next semester. you can also drop classes the first two weeks of the semester, if you feel like it’d be too much. but i’d say the usual credit load is probably 14-16.

thanks naoise, that was very helpful. I’m going to take 6 classes but it will be only 14 credits since two of them are 1 credit courses.

If you’re an engineering and you don’t have any AP credit, 18 credits a semester is pretty much the norm for the first two years.

Fortunately for me, I can afford to only take 12-16 credits.

the most you can take is 18 credits.

though you can take more than 18 if you get permission from your academic adviser.

You can take more than 18 credits, it depends on what school you’re in. Different schools have different credit max credit loads. SAS has the highest, at 20 or 21 i think.

First Semester, I had 15 Credits
Chemistry (4)
Calculus (4)
Expos (3)
Gen Psych (3)
Chem Lab (1)

Second Semester, I had 17 Credits
Pharm (1)
Chemistry (4)
MicroEcon (3)
Expos II (3)
Social Psych (3)
Law and Society (3)

Even with a pretty heavy schedule, freshman year wasn’t that intense. You just need to know how to manage your time, though I would suggest not doing too much first semester. Adjusting, making new friends, joining new clubs, and keeping up with schoolwork is a lot. Second semester, I did a lot better, even though the classes were harder and I had taken more credits

my sister is in the pharm school. her 1st semester she took 18 credits, and now she does like 19, but that’s normal for her.

last semester, i started with 16 (5 classes + colloquium), plus a job that required me to literally be on call 24/7. it ended up being way too much for, and i had to withdraw from a class.

i had a friend who was a dance marathon captain (never saw her in the spring lol), had a job 2 whole days a week, plus 6 classes, & she was fine.

it all depends on the person.

My school has a 12 credit minimum and the tuition fee covers students up to 17 credits. After 17, students pay for every extra credit. There isn’t an official maximum but the most one could realistically do by filling in every available time slot would be 21.
