How many credits are normal for the first semester of freshman year? I'm planning to go pre-med but really love gov't. would it be crazy to take the normal first year pre-med schedule (aka intro bio, intro chem, fws, calc) and a intro gov't class like intro to ir? thanks

I'd say 15 credits is a healthy amount for a 1st semester student. The proposed schedule you have w/o government is good. You can see how your schedule works when classes begins and if necessary, you've got 7 weeks to drop a class without penalty.

esp. if you aren't sure you want to be premed, it could be good to explore other fields instead of devoting your whole first semester to premed.

You could take bio, chem, fws and a gov course. That way you'll be on track for premed and get to have an interesting class. Calc you could take next fall (unless you're worried about forgetting it from high school-thats the only downside). Or you could take all 5 just be willing to drop one if you're overbooked. My experience is that even though my frosh year premed courses werent super HARD, they were time consuming and with learning to study/time management/adjusting to cornell, 15 credits was a good amount.

Take a few intro government classes and intro bio. If you dislike intro bio, it's not likely that you'll want to be premed. If you do like bio, you have plenty of time to fill the premed requirements. I don't think you should take all premed classes if that precludes you from taking classes you will actually enjoy.
