I'm taking 5 classes each semester, but 16.5 credits each (I'm taking Arabic which is every day and 4.5 credits. crazy, huh!?). I'm kind of worried about the workload and would much rather take 4 classes my first semester (which would be 13.5 credits) to adjust and all, but my dad thinks I should take 5. What about you guys?

Mlles-
My son did the same Arabic course. He had five classes in all 16.5 credits and he managed. Second year Arabic is not as intensive -

do you think if he could go back, he'd take 4 courses instead? at least in 1st semester? did he get involved in any activities this year? or get a job?

oh hmmm, i just noticed i have the same problem. the way i have my schedule set up now, i have 5 classes first semester, but those 5 classes are 17 credits because my physics and chem classes are both 4 credits, not 3. to fix that though i'd have to forget about taking french, and find another elective for the winter, so...no.

Can anyone throw some light on the Science Advanced Placement Tests which will be held during last week of August? How tough are they? Are the questions multiple-choice type or are they descriptive? When are the results declared?

how many credits are we supposed to take each semester? 12-15?

the science program is alot of work... 5 courses each sem can be quite intensive... i took 4 first semester (14 credits) and 5 second (18 credits) and i found it was a better transition, but 5 courses is do-able in the first semester just tough.. it depends how much partying/socializing you want to sacrifice... freshman science just has too many hours of class a week

Hey, I'm planning on taking Arabic too. But...is it available for freshman? I didn't see it listed on the site.

He was not able to work last year (at least off campus) because the law, at that time, forbade it. It has recently changed.
The only regret he had for a fleeting moment was that the course load (he took no intro classes other than Arabic 1) brought down his GPA. But I am proud of him for taking on what he did and sticking to it.
I don't believe he regrets it in the least.
I was a foreign language major -the first year of INTENSIVE study can be hard but subsequent years tend to become easier -this from my own experience.
And while he did not join organized actitivies his first year, he did make an awful lot of good friends-all high achievers.
Good luck to you.

DER-
I believe you must request department approval. My son's High School GPA was quite high and he excelled in French language in Middle and HS-not sure if that helped. I know he applied for approval and received same.
However, throughout the year it was touch and go as he found Arabic quite difficult. But he stuck with it and is continuing with Arabic as it is one of his minors.

DerDrache, I asked for Department Approval. There are 13 spots left.

1st year science isn't hard. lots of students don't do so well because rez is such a distraction that you can't get anything done...and also, mcgill likes to schedule all the 1st year science exams close together which REALLY screws u over! for the winter semester, i think the bio final was tuesday, then chem was wednesday, and physics was thursday. i guess it's all a part of the weeding process for med hopefuls.
