How many credits did you take your first semester?

I had orientation and they suggested I take 12 and stick with it as it is my first semester. I'm considering taking 16 and adding one more class. But I'm not sure if that's too much for my first semester.

I'm taking College Composition, Pre-Calculus and General Chemistry II w/ a lab. If I add a class it'd be some non-science, humanities or art class, probably. I won't be working and I may join one or two clubs.

So how many credits did you take your first semester? And what do you recommend for my case?

I’m not sure what school your attending so it varies I think but I took 18 my first semester (Writing, a Social Science, a small Seminar, Gen Chem, and Gen Chem lab).

18, because I’m insane. Actually my best semester gpa wise…

(gen chem, gen chem lab, calc 2, intro to bme, physics, photo)

18, really?
Haha, not doing all that.
What were your GPAs for that semester?

I’m planning on double majoring, so right now I’m lined up to take 17 credits…
But my hardest class will be pre-calc (which I’ve already taken) and I won’t have to write too many essays since all of my classes are in one of my majors (I already took stats and english 101).

Right now I have:
Principles of Programming with Java (3 credits)
Principles of Programming with Java (lab)
Designing Life (3 credits)
History of Design (3 credits)
Precalculus (3 credits)
ASU 101 (1 credit) <---- stupidest required class everrrr (we learn about the traditions of the school. Brainwash!)
Principles of Graphic Design I (3 credits)
Marching Band (1 credit)

I think I’ll be okay. (:

12, same with every semester since

12=wuss advice. Do a minimum of 14/15 unless you have a really pressing reason not to (ie. sickness etc.). I did 17 personally, which was a bit much, but wasn’t bad.

I did 15, and would suggest 14-16 to others.

I did 12…

started with 18 (big mistake) ended up dropping down to 8. should not have entered as an engineering major but still wound up with a 3.0 so it worked out somewhat

I took 70 both semesters, which is 10 credits higher than the general amount. I think it would be the equivalent of about 18credits in America.
First semester I took: Physics 2A, Numerical Differential Equations, Several Variable Calculus, Problem Solving in Physics, and Foundations of Calculus, which is an introductory analysis course.
Second semester I took: Physics 2B, Dynamics, Vector Calculus, Linear Algebra, Methods of Applied Mathematics, and Geometry and Calculus of Variations.

It was a pretty hard load, especially second semester, but well worth it.

I did 18 units and got a 4.0. Granted, most of my classes were easy:
Calculus II
Gen Chem
Honors English
Freshman seminar
2 Gen Eds

I think 12 units is incredibly low, and I would NEVER take that little. Perhaps if I were dying in a hospital or something, but I can’t imagine taking anything under 15 units.

I took 14 credits my firs semester and I did very well. However, I wasn’t very involved on campus, I was taking core classes and I wasn’t working.

I would highly suggest that you take 12 credits your first semester and 15 the next. Its fairly easy to makeup those three credits you missed your first semester but its hard to bring up a very low GPA. College is nothing like high school and I see too many freshman loading up their plates with too many classes and get Cs in them.

15, and I thought it was good. Eased in a bit but still had enough. Could have done another class though without an issue.

Wouldn’t go any less than 15.

Anything less than 15 at my school makes you ineligible for dean’s list.

18 with a 4.0
Gen. Chem
" " Lab
Gen. Bio.
" " Lab
Honors English
Honors Calc.
Freshman Seminar

And it wasn’t so bad. When I dropped down to 15 my next semester I felt like I had waaay to much free time.

If I were you, I’d add a class and get your credit hours for first semester up to 15/16. That way, if you decide you hate a class or you don’t think you can do well in a class after the semester starts, you’re able to drop one without dipping below 12.

I took 16 first semester and have taken 20 every term since (16 is standard, 20 is max permitted). I enjoyed having only 4 classes instead of 5 for my first term, since I could relax, adjust to college life, and focus on my Computer Science class, which was more challenging than I was expecting.

In your case, you should be aware that, unless you have external credit, 12 credits would slow down your progress towards graduation, according to the school website. That’s something to keep in mind if graduating in 4 years is important to you.

12? That is a light load. I took 16 my first semester and worked an average of 13 hrs a week (sometimes 18 hrs), and I got a 3.9. I am now taking 15 creds/quarter, and I consider that to be my lucky number.

Took 17 my first semester, and it wasn’t bad. Got a 4.0. You should go with the 16 because 12 is really light.

I took 15 my first semester. It gave me plenty of time to adjust, join clubs, and have a good social life. I have taken either 17 or 18 every semester since.
