I am trying to coordinate my plans for getting both my kids to college this fall, which will involve airline reservations and figuring out the logistics since I need to get them to colleges in different parts of the country at the same time. If I'm not mistaken it looks like freshman should plan on moving into their dorms at Harvey Mudd on Aug 26th (please correct me if I am wrong!) How many days do parents typically remain in town? Are there any activities we should plan on being at? Thanks for any advice!

We only stayed the one day to get our son moved in and fed him dinner. We stayed for the signing of the Roster, which I think is the evening of the first day of orientation, but someone might want to correct me on that if I am wrong. Right after that, there were dorm meetings, and the next day was fully scheduled. Basically, the parents are gently kicked out that first night (it was actually on the schedule - parents say goodbye). The upperclassmen pitch in with trips to the Target and other things for the days after that before classes start. So, they are in good hands. My husband and I spent the night in LA (of course there were lots of sniffles on my part!).

Hi, here is the schedule for Parents for the orientation:

http://www.hmc.edu/studentlife1/studentservices1/orientation1/parentorientation2010.html

There is stuff from Wednes night at 6pm to Friday morning… “Parents depart after breakfast”…

The 1-2pm meeting on Thursday is very helpful and imho shouldn’t be missed. The Friday breakfast is good if you want to be active in the Parents’ Association, especially if you are local, but it’s not critical.

Don’t count on seeing your kiddo on Friday at all. As azalia mentioned above, the frosh will be booked solid.

Thanks everyone for the info. The link to the orientation schedule was exactly what I needed, since I looked on the website, but could not find the schedule myself!

Hi, I’ve also found it useful to lurk at the Harvey Mudd 2014 facebook page.

<a href=“Facebook Public Group | Facebook”>Facebook Public Group | Facebook;

The mail page has some links and the discussions have some insight into what the students are thinking. But, it maybe more than you want to know or need to know!

Cheers.

A better question is

How many hours do parents stay?

There is a yahoo group set up specifically for parents of HMC students. Search for HMCParents in Yahoo groups. It’s an excellent resource and a good way to meet and get advice from “veteran” Mudd parents.

This sounds fantastic, but I looked for every permutation I could think of and couldn’t find it. Can you please check the name or send a link? Thanks!

Here it is: [hmcparents : Harvey Mudd Parents](<a href=“Yahoo | Mail, Weather, Search, Politics, News, Finance, Sports & Videos”>Yahoo | Mail, Weather, Search, Politics, News, Finance, Sports & Videos).

There is a link through the Harvey Mudd site as well.

Azalia,
you are faster than me. It’s a great site for parents.
