how many examples to use for the SAT essay?

i know CB always says it doesn't matter how many examples are used, but from your personal experiences how many examples got you a high score? thanks :)

3 is best but if you can only think of 2 good ones just elaborate on those. Fill up both pages: whether that includes 2 or 3 examples will vary.

LITERATURE

The 2 Greek Epics Iliad and Odyssey - If you read them, you’d realize that they can seriously be used for any essay prompt. They have themes of hubris, downfall, role of women, custom v. law, temptation… ANYTHING.

The 3 Theban Play (mainly Oedipus the King and Antigone) - These plays can be used for any essay… Once again tragedy, downfall, law, loyalty, honesty, family, and love are found here.

Beowulf - A classic Old English poem can be used for loyalty, love, nationalism, war, evil v. good, travel, and competition.

The Kite Runner - Loyalty, friendship, immigration, truth, race, sexism, ethnicity, the hardship of children.

The Bible - Ummm yeah. It’s the Bible. It’s 2000 pages long. You’ll find something to write about, but just hope that your essay grader isn’t Buddhist/Atheist/Anti-Christian or Semitic/or just plain old biased. Avoid the themes of love in the New Testament… don’t want to offend any Jews. Stick to the Old Testament, but avoid Maccabees… it’s not in the Jewish Bible.

Harry Potter - Seriously, are you in 1st grade?

HISTORY & PEOPLE

John Paul II - His life was about protection, loyalty, honesty, faith, goodness, battle with evil, forgiveness, and bravery in times of danger.

MLK - You should know enough about him.

Obama - DON’T WRITE ABOUT HIM… JUST DON’T. WE DON’T WANT TO START A POLITICAL WAR.

I gave 2 examples: one from literature and one from a “made-up” personal experience.

I think 3, to be safe. But, they should not all be from literature. Make at least one from your life (real or made up) and maybe one from history or current events. Fill up both pages. Try to use a good transition word between paragraphs.

write 3 examples. First, refer to the article. Second, connet to yourself. 3rd, connnect to real life issues (socio-political)

is it ok to use the word “I” in the essay?

^completely okay to use “I”.

Three - one from contemporary, historical, and literature.

I usually use 2 examples, but aim for 3 if you can develop all of them thoroughly. I know people who just used 2 examples and got 12.

I like to use an example from history and an example from literature. If I can’t think of anything else, I use a personal example.
