How many freshman students in pre med ?

does any one know how many freshman students at JHU are in pre med track every year ?

I guess at least over 50%, ie, 600-700.

The actual answer is 0. Since pre-med is not something a freshman would ever register for or denote with any advising office it is impossible to know for certain what that number is. I can definitely let you know it is not 50%.

From surveys by the Office of Pre-Professional Advising is estimated that about 25% of incoming freshmen plan to follow the pre-med advising track with about 20% of graduating seniors having completed the track.

lol I love that answer it is so true, pre-med is not a major, nor will it ever be. However, it is more of a guidance on which courses you should choose so you will be prepared for MCAT and med school.

Do students following the pre-med track at Hopkins overshadow all the other students? I’ve just heard it’s so cutthroat…is that because of all the pre-med students?

What do you mean “overshadow”? As AdmissionsDaniel pointed out, pre-meds are clearly in the minority.

Not necessarily.
Pre-meds are in the minority compared to the entire undergraduate student body; compared to all other tracks/majors, perhaps pre-med is largest. I don’t know…that’s why I asked.

The cut-throat myth has been discussed numerous times already on the JHU forums on College Confidential. Just do a search and you will find numerous threads that discuss the question of whether Hopkins students are competitive / cut-throat. You can also read through these threads on the Hopkins Forums:

I am tired of estimating the rough numbers of pre-med at JHU, but I really like to read
Duke forum

(at Duke ) about 30% of the entering freshman class is premed, but after genchem/ochem, a lot decide that medicine is not their calling lOL.

brown2009, this doesn’t make sense. You’re asking about how many premed students are in JHU, why should we care about Duke? As they have said, the rough estimate is 25%. If you’re tired of rough estimates, that’s too bad, because it’s all you’re going to get at the moment!

In 2008, Johns Hopkins had 352 student apply to medical school according to the AAMC. Assuming that all of those were members of the class of 2008, pre-med seniors made up 32.9% of their class (the class had 1070 students).

Assuming some of the students graduated a year or two prior, the number is still undoubtedly much higher than 20%. I suspect the number of incoming pre-med students is even higher, quite possibly as high as 40-45%.

They were not. Many Hopkins undergraduates delay applying to medical school for one, two, three, or even more years.

I can pretty much guarantee the number is not even close to being that high for the Class of 2013. More signifcantly, the number of incoming freshmen planning to apply to Medical School after four years of undergraduate study has been dropping at Hopkins over the last few years as we bring in many more students who choose to study the Humanities, the Social Sciences, and non-Bioengineering fields.

I have had many conversations with the advisors in the Office of Pre-Professional Advising and pretty much consistently the estimation is between 20-25% of students planning on going to medical school for their post-undergraduate plans.
