How many grad classes to take in one semester

So, I'm planning on doing a CS/STAT joint masters program. I was wondering if taking 3 classes + working on a thesis is too much in one semester. I would have to do this at one point since I am considering doing a 5 year BS/MS program. Any input would be appreciated!

By the way, none of those 3 courses will be seminar courses. They will all be regular grad courses.

9-12 credits is typical, so basically 2-3 core classes and 3 credits of thesis research. It mainly will depend when you need to get done and your adviser’s demands. I have only take 1-2 courses per semester and research credit because my adviser requires a serious time commitment for my research. Other MS students I know have taken up to 4 courses since their adviser basically just wants them to show up once a week and do a little bit of work.

1 year with core classes and writing a thesis will be very rough, just giving you a heads up. Though again this is based on my professor requiring minimal- 2 journal publications, a thesis, and a good amount of work before he lets me graduate. Honestly, unless you worked on the project in undergrad it really takes a whole semester to even get going with all the background needed (if your research is original and ambitious) .
