How many hours of work do you think i can manage?

My fall quarter schedule is Physics 6A, Chem 14C, a music class, and a foreign language. How many hours do you think i should be able to pull?

Music class? It's not a GE is it or is it part of your being in the music school or some sort of orchestra? Most people will do about 12-13 hours of work. Is it imperative that you take four classes? If the music class is a GE, I'd drop it. If your foreign language class is Spanish or French, I'd put it off if the coursework seems like its too much. If you place into your foreign language and it's mostly a review for you, take the units along with the rest of your load and drop a course by the 4th week if it's absolutely necessary that you work part-time. As for 6A and 14C -- is there any rush at this point to finish 14C? You've already gone through a few quarters worth so if you're adamant about the music and foreign language (IMO, not the most important requirement to be concerned with right now), I would just do the 14C another quarter...

In any case - drop one of the classes by the fourth week assuming it's non-impacted and keep 12-13 hours solid for work.

Jesus. With that schedule I wouldn't work AT ALL.

Would you lose money if you did that? I thought that you can only get a refund the first week.

As a Freshmen that seems like a pretty heavy course load as it is. Honestly first quarter you really just want to enjoy yourself and have the time to meet people and go out. If you have to have a job you should really consider at least dropping a class and making sure you don't have to work on weekends or Thr/Fri evenings. Having that time free to go out an explore LA/meet new people is really important as a Freshmen.

But eventually the average student can handle anywhere from 10-25 hours a week (one of my roommates worked 25 hours a week, I personally feel anything over 15 starts to become a burden and interferes with studying/sleep). Also you have to consider what type of job it is. I do a semi labor intensive job, so I only work 12-13 hours. Plus my job isn't open on weekends or past 6, so I can't be scheduled at those times. My friend who works 25 hours does it all at a computer with a lot of down time.

All things to consider. :)

You guys, bgirl is going to be starting her second year.

I think she can handle this.

For someone reason I completely forgot about that...

Sorry to intrude but I will be a freshman and plan to work. I currently work at Starbucks 22 hours a week and I'm taking 2 summer session classes. I feel a bit loaded but I'm able to manage my time to get everything done. I only plan to work about 10-15 hours during the fall. I'm only taking 3 classes (Math 3A, Chem 14A, Philosophy 6) and most my classes end at 1 PM so would working from 2-6pm 3-4 days a week be ok? And how about weekends?

What times are most social in the dorms and what do people usually do on weekdays Monday - Friday? I don't wanna miss out on anything but I sort of have to do this.

Thanks for the help...

Well if you want parties then Thursday night tends to be the Frat party night. Apartment parties are either Thrs/Fri/Sat nights. If you want to go out and about in LA then Friday and Saturday nights are when people tend to do the most. (By Sunday night people often need to catch up on HW).

And weekdays really depend on your group of friends/what you are interested in. During the day most people have classes/work/activities. And since classes often can be scheduled till 6 (or occasionally later), then hanging out with friends will usually be in the evenings (dinner and onwards). You can venture into LA/Westwood during weeknights, but most people in the dorms can't afford to eat out every night when they have a meal plan. Hence, a lot of kids save eating out for Fri/Saturday.

Basically, if you are working weekdays before 6, don't worry about "missing out". That is a totally reasonable time to be busy.

whered u guys get the idea im a freshman? lol
basically the language im taking is a language i already speak
and music is a fun and easy class..

with all this said ..cna i get a good opinion on how many hours you guys think are possible?

THANX!

I think you should know best. If you don't, then find out.

YOU'RE WELCOME!
