How many hours should one work while taking 16 credit hours?

Hey everyone.

So far this semester, I've been managing to work between 9-14 hours a week while taking 16 credits. I have pretty good grades, but I know that it's only the beginning of the semester.

How many more would be too much? I was thinking on adding about 10 more per week, and most of it would be squeezed into Tuesday and Thursday, my days off. I usually stockpile my homework for the weekend, but there are of course some situations where a bulk of stuff needs to get done on a weekday.

I've never worked during the academic year before, so I'm looking for some advice. Thanks!

I wouldn’t do any more than maybe an additional 3-5 hours a week. I worked 12 hrs/wk when I took 16 credits but I worked on campus, which made it easy to study.

I work 40 hours a week. I’m taking 15 units in person and 6 units online. It’s hard. No lie, it gets difficult but, totally manageable. It all depends on the person and what you are willing to sacrifice. It does require that my weeks are planned in advance but this is what I want to accomplish right now. So, when you ask how many hours a week you should work, it depends on what you are able to handle.

I agree with UCB. Everyone is different. Only you know how much you can handle without jeopardizing your grades. Why don’t you try adding a few hours a week and see how that goes. Remember, school comes first then work.
