So I'm sure some of you read my earlier "Chose U of M over Duke" thread...well it turned out after I sent them an email saying I was really frustrated, their financial aid process worked out much faster. They sent me a revised letter today, which included a total of around $13,000/year in aid, about 6000-7000 was scholarship, about 1600 workstudy, and the rest of it loans. So...my parents have pretty much told me "See...we told you. Go to U of M." I made one last plea by emailing some other people (Dean of admissions), so I am hoping it will lead to something.

U of M was giving me 26k/year in scholarship for 4 years (so its guaranteed too)

Which of you guys gave up Duke for another school and which school was it? Was finances your main issue?

^dude, that's sick. How did you manage to get into all of HYPSM? Care to share what might have helped you get in? I know that many with perfect scores get rejected from those.

Duke is my top choice but speaking for kids at school who i know:
1. wake forest > duke
2. dartmouth > duke
3. mit > duke
4. williams ? duke
5. hopkins ? duke

strange mix, won't even pretend to know the reasons for all of them

I don't have perfect scores, maybe thats why i got in?

That's retarded. They have similar "profiles," but in every category - academic excellence, diversity, student vibrancy, etc. etc. - Duke is much stronger. Why the hell would you ever go to Wake over Duke? I just got back from a BDD and realized how little some of these kids know about the colleges they are looking at. I'm betting this kid is one of them.

dartmouth > duke

Yeah yeah makes sense - that's what the numbers from previous years would lead us to expect. But I think Dartmouth's comparative yield over Duke is getting smaller.

mit > duke

Makes sense again - but, but, but, I think the marginal difference is shrinking. And there are and have always beeen a number of students who dump MIT for Duke.

williams ? duke

Good choice, anyone who isn't afraid of life should go to Duke. Williams is awesome but frankly its for kids who need nurturing.
5. hopkins ? duke

Pff Duke all the way. Even if you are premed. Suicide is the word.

The "chart thing" is the NYT Revealed Preference ranking----its the most flawed thing on the site. Duke beats or is equal to every Ivy in cross-admits besides (HYPSM) and beats Cornell, NU, Georgetown, etc. in cross-admits.

This is according to the Duke dean of admissions.

I'm at Duke now and love it for many reasons.
However, there are many schools I would still probably turn down Duke for.. either because of personal reasons or prestige reasons.

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Columbia, Brown, Swarthmore (didn't apply to Yale, Stanford, or Swarthmore last year).. possibly Dartmouth (turned it down last year) these days.
But besides that, Duke is pretty up there.
Knowing what I know about Duke though, to be honest, I would have probably picked D'mouth if I was in the same situation again..

really? i feel like dartmouth and duke share all the same negatives (excessive drinking among some students, more conservative campus, too many future i-bankers and not enough intellectuals) but duke has tons more resources and better weather. i don't really see much of a reason to turn duke down for dartmouth but to each his own.
