how many internships should you apply to?

I don't know how all out to go to (and also I don't know whether I'm annoying the professors I'm asking for recommendations this way). Should I set my limit to 10? 30? 50? 90? I mean 90 applications isn't that difficult, especially since the deadlines are spread out over 2 months.

The thing is I'm worried that my acceptance rate at each position will be very small, and everyone else is doing the same thing. On the other hand if I apply to 90 internships (some of which have multiple labs) and get accepted to say, 17, then I just basically wasted a lot of slots for 16 people.

i’m applying to 5, but i’m pretty sure i have a guaranteed back up if i don’t get accepted to any of them. I worked with a professor last summer in his lab, and i’m pretty sure i could work there again this summer if i wanted although i haven’t actually talked to him yet about my summer plans.

I am currently at 35 and not quite done yet.

I applied to 11, I think. And I’m contacting some labs individually. I think people will understand that you may get accepted at more than one place and that you can only pick one. You can always turn down a position, which will go to someone else on the waitlist. As long as you do this in a timely fashion, I don’t see what the problem is.

I’m probably at 7 now but who’s counting? I plan on emailing a bunch of alums soon and asking about opportunities as well.

I only applied for two, got into both, and am doing both. Worked out very nicely for me. :P

Anyway, I think it’s smart to apply to everything you’re interested in and make sure at least one thing is a pretty certain acceptance. (Low application rate, lots of open positions, you know someone in charge, etc.)

I’m surprised people are applying to many places for an internship… Geez…

Well, for me I’ve applied to all 32 NFL teams. So yeah, that’s a pretty solid chunk of my 35ish but still plenty of work. I have to look for other opportunities too though because at each NFL team there are no more than 5 spots open. Most have 1-3 if any and each team gets 100’s of applications each year.

^ Really? For what area are you applying for? Cause I do know that the Jets haven’t posted their internship opportunities yet…

Athletic Training. And their spots are already full. I received a letter from them last week…
