So, I am really looking to do an academic/ science type activity this summer, but I'm not sure how many I should apply to before feeling like I've applied to enough. I've already applied to RSI and MITES (both of which I have no chance of getting in to) and am about to apply to Harvard SSP. In case I don't get into anything, I always have a job doing stem cell research that I can fall back on, but I want to be able to do something rigorous/prestigious this summer. I am an URM but I have a low gpa and high test scores. Any suggestions? How many places should I apply to, considering I have technically chances at harvard ssp. And also, how can I ask certain teachers for this many recommendations?

...do you realize how absurd that sounds to 99.9% of high school students out there?

sorry. I didn't mean it like that... I just meant that if I don't get into anything, it won't be the end of the world, but the lab that I work in hasn't accomplished anything major/significant since about 2002. oops. and before i meant to say that i only have chances at one place.

Its goot to have a backup, but I would apply to cornell and brown's summer program.

summer@brown is not prestigious; TASP's (cornell's program) deadline has passed.

neither, really, is Harvard SSP btw. You'll definitely get into that =O

I regret doing Harvard SSP, not because its a "bad" program, because it isnt. The life experience is really great, but academically there are many better programs out there. Harvard SSP holds almost no weight on resumes, and thus, in my opinion its not worth the money.

I like this thread. Anyway, I personally applied for 2 not-gonna-happen programs (TASP and the plant research internship at Cornell), and I'm also applying for a local-but-competitive paid internship. If all fails (which it probably will), I'll probably do a Landmark Volunteers trip if my parents will pony up the money and beg to help at the local university (which is an arts university and has a sucky biology program. Sigh.).
