I don't argue with the fact that qualified applicants are given admittance. HOWEVER - and if I'm wrong please point this out to me, but at least from my point of view and experience, the vast majority of schools in america do not consist of schools where the top 10% or top 20% of the student body has 1280+ sats (the 25% for this year at UVa). Now, if you can honestly tell me that UVa admits lots of OOS students in the top 10% with 1280, then maybe i'm wrong. But its obvious from the numbers that it doesn't - and that the majority of the low score SATers are athletes, instaters, or blacks - which is absolutely fine.

Its generally established that to get into UVa from OOS you need to either be A) black B) an athlete C) extremely well qualified D) legacy E) all of the above. Since most OOS applicants probably fall into that C category, there simply are only so many students in the top 10% of their class with great SATs at any particular high school.

So, while yes UVa can accept as many students as they want from a particular high school, I believe that the occurance of it is very rare. Why admit 6 students from 1 high school where 4 are borderline, when you could admit 2 students from 3 high schools where they all are very well qualified.

Jags, your original post implied that we won't admit more than 2 or 3 students from an out of state school. I simply stated that this assumption was incorrect.

ah, no i guess it came out wrong. its unlikely that more than 2 or 3 students would get accepted OOS from the same school - reasons being what i stated above.

my school sucks at sending to kids the good southern publics. this year, we were like 1 out of 7 for UVA, 1 out of 14 for W&M, and 0 for 8 at UNC. i think the one that got into UVA was for sports, which paints an even more dire picture for me lol

Well, let's not sugar coat this. Getting into UVa from OOS is tough. Dean J can choose from a large group of well-qualified applicants. Your job, goodcolleges, is to stand out in that crowd. Your better-qualified associates will not hurt your chances. But, there are many things IN YOUR CONTROL that can. Go read Dean J's terrific discussion on essay questions ("The Good, The Bad, and the Risky").
