For all the polyglots out there, how many languages do you speak? I am interested in learning one or two additional languages and need to pick up some tips. Did you learn because it was your love of languages that drove you, or was it required by the school? Also, what is the fastest way to acquire competency in a language (4000-5000 common vocabulary words and grammar)? Finally, what languages would you recommend for me to learn?

Personally I am fluent in English and Spanish (7 years in school). This year I have started to learn French, and I find it easier since I understand all of the grammar topics from learning Spanish.

What do you speak, and what do you think I should learn after French? I have little to no interest for Asian languages right now (Korean,Mandarin,Japanese, Tagalog...)

I speak English fluently (or at least am proficient, depending on your definition of fluency). I know basic Hebrew, Spanish, and Japanese. I took Hebrew in middle school and am taking Spanish in high school. I am teaching myself Japanese. I am interested in becoming fluent in Japanese and Korean (besides English).

I speak 4.5 languages. I know English obviously, I am also fluent in ASL and SEE. I’m still working on my Spanish and German, which are still rudimentary at best.

@jasonleb1, you can do ASL too? Neat, but you’re not Deaf/deaf by any chances, are you?

I’m fluent in English. I’m in my fourth year of French. First year of Spanish. I would like to be fluent in French and at least proficient in Spanish. I would also like to pick up a few more languages, preferably Russian, Italian, Serbian, and Hebrew. Maybe Esperanto. And a dead language, like Sanskrit. (And I say “pick up” very lightly. You can’t exactly learn a language in a week :p)

I speak Engrish fluently. My Indonesian is weird, because last night I realized I could understand the majority if what my mom and her friends were saying, but I couldn’t really respond in Indonesian. They laugh whenever I say something… :(

Oh, and this is my 6th year in French, as I am now in AP French. I’m alright, but learning a language in a classroom is so different from actually using it in real life.

I took Spanish last year, and I regret not taking it this year, because I liked it. I really want to learn Hindi, too. OH and I know how to say three surats in Arabic, but I have no idea what I’m saying besides “Allah” and “Muhammad” allahuakbar" and other choice words. Not useful.

I speak English fluently (duh, lol), and I’m in my fourth year of French right now. I’d say I speak French at a pretty decent level. When I went to France during the summer, someone actually complimented me on it! I was so proud of myself. Lol.
