how many letter of recs?

in general how many letter of recs need to be submitted. also, do I try to get as many as possible or just exactly as many as I need?

Aim for two good teacher ones, and an additional one from another teacher, like of an elective or something, coach, ect. Admission officers don’t want to see 23 recomendations. Seriously. :P

As in all things, quality > quantity. The above advice is great.

^ Exactly. The saying goes “The thicker the file, the thicker the student.” If you want to do one thing that annoys admissions officers (other than having terrible typos) is to overwhelm them with miscellaneous and utterly useless generic rec letters

Generally you should get the number of rec letters required by the colleges to which you are applying and you really don’t need to send more (in fact many colleges say not to send any more than required and some of those even indicate that they will really frown upon you for sending more than required). That number varies among colleges, two, one, and many none.

okay thanks a lot for the advice!

You are best off giving them what they want. If it is two give them two, not three, unless there is a very compelling reason for the extra one.
