I would love to got to UNM but I’m wondering how many students actually live on campus? I know it’s a commuter school, but is there still a large percentage that stay on the weekends? I’m not so worried about there not being parties etc. just wondering of the first couple weeks trying to make friends I’ll be stuck on campus with not a lot of people. Anyone have any general experience with UNM?
There’s enough housing for 3300 students to live on campus, most of which are freshmen and sophomores. Residence halls run between 85% to 90% capacity depending on where the student lives. Upperclassmen tend to move off campus or to Lobo Village. My D is a sophomore. This is her 2nd year living on campus. She has made lots of friends and really likes living there. The week before school starts and into the first week, fun events are held every day for on-campus residents so that they can get to know each other (scavenger hunts, movies on the grass at night, Olympiads, etc…). My D has hardly come home this year because she has been busy with friends pretty much every weekend. While the majority of students at UNM commute, living on campus has been a great experience.
The one downfall of living on campus at UNM is the dining hall. Last year it was revamped along with a price increase. D said the food and selections were pretty decent last year with 24/7 unlimited dining. She said this year the food is just awful and not the same as last year. She is ready to move off campus with friends next year mainly because they can’t stand the food.
