How many middle eastern peopel ge4t accepted to Brown?

ok i see this thread has gone off topic but can someone please answer my question, what would give me a better chance if i applied as a middle eastern from Turkey, a middle eastern from Saudi Arabia, middle eastern Persian or a South east Asian from Pakistan

i think that the Pakistan thing would hurt me because a lot of pakis apply with high stats so should i just apply as a middle eastern turk, Saudi or persain????????????????????

Different backgrounds is a good thing, why don't you apply as everything? In other words, why don't you say the most sincere?

yea but a certain race or ethnicity can hurt me because a lot of other applicants might by applying with better stats such as a Pakistani??????????

so which one will give me the best chance??????????

Dude it'd be lying not to show that you're Paki. Do you understand that?

maybe talking to the president of brown's arab club will help you feel better.

I truly find it disgraceful that you are strategizing about how to best portray yourself ethnically. You should be ashamed if you're really considering manipulating your application in that way. It makes you appear desperate and unconfident in your abilities if you truly believe that your ethnicity will be a significant deterrant to your application.

I know we joke about how great it'd be to be Eskimo or Native American, but come on!

I'm not strategizing, i asked a simple question what i should put on my app as my ethnicity/ race its really not that complicated if you can't answer the question then don't!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i asked for was feed back form other students on what my decision should be

Put what you are. Not what will help you most. Unless you're cool with lying.

Its not lying if you don't. Its called racism and we are feeling the effects of it. Because of this racism, it leads to people not wanting to put who they truly are on their applications. Don't put pakistani. Put a combination of everything else. If you speak those languages, it would help even more. Its not lying by doing that. Its just simply doing what every single applicant is doing for colleges, trying to make themselves look better.

oh, you want to know the sad and awful truth? I'm an arab. They do have a quota for the middle east. One of the admissions officers is a turkish woman, the ass doesnt accept arabs and fills up the quota with turks. its complete bullsit. I recently got rejected ED. Everyone was shocked to find that out including me, I have a 98-99% and amazing stats overall, my SAT scores aren't the best, but are very good considering the people applying from my country. Anyway, i called to ask why i got rejected, and one of the admissions offficers told me my grades were too low, ofcourse everyone knows thats bs because how the hell can my grades be low?! she could have said my essays weren't that great, she could have made up any excuse, but using my grades as a cover is stupid. I know 5 arabs apply last year to Brown, all whom got rejected. Now, they are at Harvard, georgetown, wellesley, and UCLA. Brown don't like arabs, its a fact, so unless you're turkish, I think being middle eastern will hurt your application. Sorry.*

That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard. I heard the admissions lady is 1/8 Transylvanian, and she only lets in Dracula!

And I don't want to be mean, but judging from stats you have posted, your standardized tests are far from amazing. And teh intl argument doesn't work, there are plenty with good scores. Maybe it wasn't the not being Turkish?

Karl Marks, are you saying that there isnt the slightest possibiltity that I'm right? Brown does have a quota from students from the middle east, and one of the admission officers is turkish, dont you think theres a chance they accept more turks instead of arabs? not because some might be more qualified, but because they want Turks?
I know my SAT scores aren't amazing, but not a lot of people in Saudi get high scores on the SAT, and apparently they compare you to your own country so not many compare with my stats. Plus, my gpa, essays, and activies are good.

Sigh, juggie, there are even quotas in the U.S., but you don't see a chinese kid from california or a white boy from Massachusetts *****ing about it. And I don't know where you are getting this "comparision" info. Yes they compare intl regions when applying, but you are still intl, and it is very tough to get in that way. I bet there are plenty of people from Asia (where SA is located) who have ridiculous stats. And everyone's gpa/ecs/stuff was good. I highly doubt some prejudiced adcom accepts 4 students from Turkey rather than 2 from SA; in fact, I feel stupid for even thinking about it.

Yeah saudi is part of Asia, but we are never put in the same quotas that ppl from China and Singapore are in. The middle east has their own quota. Btw there is a specific admissions officer for the middle east, not all of asia. And I'm pretty sure noone goes over the ppl she rejects, I really dont know. but whatver, i think what im saying is right and is atleast partially correct.

Why don't you call and ask the same lady who explained to you the reason you got rejected.... =|?

the lady is an idiot, when i asked her she kept on stuttering and then she told me me my grades were low, then i asked her how can my 98% average be low, its ridiculous, then shes like umm umm, we're expecting a lot of ppl from saudi to apply this year, but you can always transfer once you're at college...

Out of curiosity, how low were your SATs? Did you apply for financial aid? I don't think financial aid is need-blind for internationals. Also, having top grades doesn't mean everything. Brown only accepts around 25% of valedictorians. What were your ECs like. I agree with most people in this thread. You just sound bitter, which is normal, but it is unfair to blame getting rejected on racism/nationalism/what have you.

PS, to the original poster-- don't try to change who you are for the sole purpose of getting in. if you deserve to get in, you will. regardless of what you may think, being a middle eastern turk won't hurt or help more than being Pakistani.

"the lady is an idiot, when i asked her she kept on stuttering and then she told me me my grades were low, then i asked her how can my 98% average be low, its ridiculous, then shes like umm umm, we're expecting a lot of ppl from saudi to apply this year, but you can always transfer once you're at college..."

I guess sarcasm doesn't write well...

hahaha, im just really ****ed i guess lol

Rikataka, my ecs were pretty good (MUN president, varsity captain, president of the math club, represented Saudi at international conferences discussing internatioal social issues and stuff, and a lot of other ecs volunteering, the usual stuff lol) No, I didnt apply for financial aid my SAT scores were around 2000 (12 on the essay, one of the only ppl in saudi to EVER get 12 on the essay)

I must say that even for an international, 2000 isn't spectacular or anything you know...
