As in, someone who legitimately understands at least the basics of music, preferably but not necessarily music theory, composition, etc. :D

Piano and Percussion but really I am a composer.

Piano for as long as I can remember, Percussion 3 years, Composition hard to say really.

At piano or percussion hell to the no, for composition yeah I think I’m quite good at it.

Yes, realistically it (and letters of recommendation from collaborators, teachers and other composers) is what got my into Harvard (probably).

If your nice I’ll PM you the link to a piece of mine.

Almost 4 years trombone; 3 on tuba

Definitely talent, considering I rarely practice and sure as hell can’t afford private lessons.

Most definitely.

I’m not a good judge of my own talent, but I have made Region band every year I’ve tried out.

Euphonium, Trombone, and a little Tuba
Euphonium: 2-3 years, Trombone: 6 years, Tuba: No idea
No idea… both, maybe.
Who knows… we’ll see.
Not sure… I don’t think I’m horrible, but I don’t think I’m great.

Piano and viola.
Piano 9 years. Viola 8 years.
Talent. I realized that i play a lot better than most people without trying or practicing a lot.
It is.
College level for piano. Low High school lvl viola.

-Trumpet, for seven years.
-Not really sure. I used to be really good, when I practiced ALL the time. It was fun. Then I got private lessons, and I started to hate it. That’s when I became a very average trumpet player.
-Well, band is a major EC. I’ve been/will be on the staff all three years I’m eligible (freshies can’t have stripes). I started in an administrative position my soph. year and then became drum major (I don’t have anything to do with the music though). So I hold a high leadership position, but I’m not a good musician.
-When I was promoted to drummy, I was 17th out of 39 I was a contributing member but not great. As a drum major, however, I’ve been told by people who would know that I’m very good.

-Clarinet for 6 years
-Pretty good I would say, dedicated to it. Sad my current school has no band
-I never did private lessons, so I guess I never got tired of it
-I can compose off the top of my head quite well actually, and even write lyrics that fit a piece well.

Viola for two years, I played violin beforehand so the only thing that was I had to deal with was the clef change. I play in the school orchestra and in a string quartet.
I’m in a percussion ensemble at school, but my marimba solo section in our performance kind of reflected on how un-skillful I was…

piano

two years

no talent. Its just really fun to play!!

no, its for fun

not that

Violin
11 years (including this yr)
I “learned” talent (I learned perfect pitch and all that)
I do a bunch of musical ECs.

I’m no asian nerd. I play for fun a lot now. I can easily hear and play all those pop songs. But I’m not that great when it comes to very high level classical music.

Piano, since I was in 1st grade…so that’s 8 1/2 years now? I have several diplomas in it from MTAC CM and ABRSM for Practical and Theory. I do recitals but not for competition yet. I’m planning to compete in SYMF but I can’t find an MTAC teacher. I think I’m pretty good at it unless I don’t practice of course but it doesn’t usually take as long of a time for me to learn a piece as other people do. And I put a lot more emotion and expressions in my songs than other people do. Meh, I’m not like others who think it’s just about playing the right notes. It’s gotta have feeling too.

Flute, from 4th to 6th grade for Advanced Band in elementary school. I don’t like to play it anymore because it requires excessive cleaning. >_>

Piano-playing Asian female. …Oh wait, that’s redundant ;)

Six years of study; past two years at a notable classical conservatory.

Most likely “luck”, although I like to believe that I’m talented.

I’m considering quitting piano, so I might not even mention this on my apps.

I honestly don’t think I’m skilled, but I do enjoy playing piano. Unlike most of my peers, I don’t treat piano as a competitive sport, but more as a hobby.

*Alto/Tenor/Baritone saxophone and… guitar.
*6 years for sax, 5ish for guitar.
*With sax, a large amount of my early success was probably talent, but I’ve recently found that straight up hard work goes a long way and is absolutely necessary as one’s playing level increases, in order to keep improving. Guitar is more of a hobby; it’s not something I take too seriously.
*Definitely with saxophone – jazz band and/or wind ensemble.
*Personally I feel like I’ve been very fortunate audition-wise in the past year to make TN Governor’s School for the Arts and TN All-State. Yet again, hard work and preparation pay off. I am definitely not the most technically-skilled player, but I’m solid in that respect, and I strive constantly to put more and more emotion into my playing. As a musician one must create some emotional connection with the listener or what one produces is just noise.

Pianooooo
10ish years
I have skill because I’ve practiced a lot.
I’m considering it as a minor and I play in the jazz band at school
I don’t want to judge how good I am, I think I covered it in part 3

I play guitar, piano, bass clarinet in order of care/effort. I don’t play the piano or clarinet much
5 years guitar, 3 years piano, 6 years clarinet

Accepted into our Wind Ensemble… had to drop it because of schedule conflicts. Only music group I am in is Jazz Ensemble.

In terms of talent… I was first clarinetist despite never practicing. Was soon made bass clarinetist… again never practiced. I honestly didn’t like the instrument much.

Something I’m more proud of though is my ability to improvise. I don’t mean to brag or anything but I’ve always had some innate ability to improvise (esp. on the guitar…). No one ever taught me to and I picked up a lot of my style from my favorite guitarist, Eric Clapton. Its something that I cherish and truly enjoy doing… I’ll often go in my basement and play along with my favorite records for hours. Unfortunately, the past few months haven’t been very easy on me. Slacked off from playing, sadly.

In fact, I drive my guitar teacher insane because my ability to improvise is so far above my ability to read and play music he struggles to teach me (I prefer learning by ear, anyway). I rarely “practice” my guitar… I just sit and play man :p

How many of you have expression and a unique musical style? Lol, I certainly don’t. I hate putting emotion into sad songs because it’s so freakin depressing.
